I think you can moderate lightly and still delete all the dumbass "I like harmberders!" Posts and comments that aren't even sensible points to rip apart.

Please also check out vegantheoryclub.org for a great set of well-run communities for vegan news, cooking, gardening, and art. It is not federated with LW, but it is a nice, cozy, all-in-one space for vegans.
We ask that the you have an understanding on what veganism is before engaging in this community.
If you think you have been banned erroneously, please get in contact with one of the other mods for appeals.
Moderator reports may not federate properly and may delay moderator action. Please DM an active mod if an abusive comment remains after reporting it.
Welcome
Welcome to c/vegan@lemmy.world. Broadly, this community is a place to discuss veganism. Discussion on intersectional topics related to the animal rights movement are also encouraged.
What is Veganism?
'Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ...'
— abridged definition from The Vegan Society
Rules
The rules are subject to change, especially upon community feedback.
- Discrimination is not tolerated. This includes speciesism.
- Topics not relating to veganism are subject to removal.
- Posts are to be as accessible as practicable:
- pictures of text require alt-text;
- paywalled articles must have an accessible non-paywalled link;
- use the original source whenever possible for a news article.
- Content warnings are required for triggering content.
- Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future.
- before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
- if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
- Posts and comments whose contents – text, images, etc. – are largely created by a generative AI model are subject to removal. We want you to be a part of the vegan community, not a multi-head attention layer running on a server farm.
- Misinformation, particularly that which is dangerous or has malicious intent, is subject to removal.

If we ban carnists we won't have any chance of converting them. We should instead argue against them when they make bad arguments.
True. I think we should have some resources in the community box and a FAQ of sorts that they can also be directed to. At the moment there seems to only be
Community about everything vegan
Although, thinking about it now, we could have a [Vegan Only] tag for posts where the discussion can be debates about veganism for vegans. Not sure if that would ever be respected or if it's even practical. That way there can be the vegan outreach as well as serious discussions on veganism.
I don't think banning carnists is the solution.
I do think that rules similar to /r/vegan would help a lot.
I think another forum would be better for arguments against veganism, otherwise this forum will just get swamped with upvoted carnist answers to vegan or vegan-curious questions, or upvoted arguments against veganism. We will also routinely see the same fallacies over and over again.
Look at the recent discussion around the post of keto.
I'd appreciate that. To make it more clear I'd call it [Vegans only], but I love the idea that the OP can decide it upfront.
Additionally a rule to exclude off-topic could be beneficial.
With compasion. Nobody loves getting attacked or made feel stupid.
Indeed
Nobody likes getting eaten or enslaved either, but carnists only seem to care about kindness and empathy when it suits them. Because they're assholes.
Hello everyone,
I am sorry I don't really have time to be on Lemmy right now, and even less so, moderating this community.
I see two options:
- I kill this community and all of you switch to one of the other vegan communities
- Some of you take over this community
If you want to become a moderator on this community, please PM me. Between the moderators we will then choose a new owner.
If less than two people answer this call by end of Sunday, I will delete this community.
Sorry about that, but I think this the best for Lemmy and the vegan community.
Edit: We now have one moderator from Australia and me from central Europe. Would be nice to have someone from the Americas to have a nice time zone distribution.
I'm from Canada so I will handle that front.
How about consolidating some of the vegan communities? You concentrate the user base (which hopefully means more consistent content and less repetition) and get more mods in one place. I know other communities have done this successfully, but it's dependent on mods agreeing, so maybe not that easy.
I'm not sure if that's gonna be able to happen here. The only other good vegan community I've found was on hexbear, and I don't think many people can even see it. I'll start looking around though, see if there are any other vegan communities that may be able to do something like this. Although, I'd hate to see it ending up super centralised just because we need mods.
Yeah, Hexbear isn't really useful for xenogender people. They're horribly transphobic
Wait, really? I've only seen trans positive stuff from them so far
They're trolling and attempting to start drama, hexbear is a lot of things but transphobic doesn't seem to be one of them.
Yeah I think more moderators are needed.
