so you’re saying Reddit peaked in 2019 and has been downhill ever since regardless of API shenanigans?

[–] STRIKINGdebate2@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Reddit has always been a mixed bag for me personally. I hate the communities and the dreary outlook it seeks to cultivate but its a great tool for finding interesting videos and memes.

[–] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 12 points 1 year ago

It all depends on the subs you interacted with.

If you allowed the defaults, news and politics to show up?

It has been a shit hole for at least a decade.

If you only viewed things like askhistorians and other focused and tightly moderated subs?

The place it still pretty good.

You're close to a decade to late for peak reddit

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago

Troof. That’s like saying /b/ peaked in 2014

The data seems to indicate that the number of NSFW posts didn't increase over time, but rather that the number of SFW posts decreased over time. I think the data suggests an interpretation that is vastly more interesting than simply that Reddit got hornier. It looks like something happened that discouraged people from posting SFW questions. Mod change? Rule change? Demographic change? I don't know

You mean starting around the time that everyone was staying home and unable to goto venues that promote relationships and casual hook ups?

Weird.

[–] alvvayson@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

And also, onlyfans grew for the same reason.

But the two effects feed upon each other: all the onlyfans creators prawl reddit for customers, growing those subs.

Well that graph shows total posts and SFW posts have declined massively. NSFW posts have grown but the impact will be disproportionately noticable as the aite is basically in decline otherwise.

That's all assuming AskReddit is representative of the site as a whole.

Since the Reddit third party API change, I only (and I mean only) use Reddit for porn. Not checking the 'frontpage', straight to the porn subreddits (within the browser ofc).

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago

There ya go. That is the only thing Reddit is still good for

[–] Jackcooper@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Redditors who have had sex... What do boobs feel like????

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Ha ha fellow human please consider send bob and vagene

[–] antonim@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 year ago

I mean, that's been noticed and parodied on reddit itself

Ask reddit sex

Hey reddit , do you like sex? Sexy sexy sex? Do you like when you put penis in women cum hole and do the sex? What is your sexiest sex you've ever sexed ? Is it the ass one (an#a l) or the v#gina one?

https://old.reddit.com/r/copypasta/comments/hczxl2/ask_reddit_sex/

I think the literally teenage userbase of the site has grown significantly in the last few years, which results in this sort of garbage.

[–] BilboBargains@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hot take: Reddit has become popular with morons and children. This is what passes for titillation and education. Mockery of thinly veiled sex questions was standard fare on the more subversive subs.

[–] Psythik@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

All the wise people left reddit, so the only ones left are idiots.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Fuck reddit

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Part of the reason I left Reddit was all the onlyfans thots. I’m not here to see tits. My wife has spectacular tits that I get to play with. I’m here to read interesting shit.

[–] alphapuggle@programming.dev 8 points 1 year ago

I used reddit for porn because this guy won't share his wife's tits

[–] newthrowaway20@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Nice humble-brag about your wife's tits.

[–] SHOW_ME_YOUR_ASSHOLE@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

I have access to amazing tits in real life as well but I still like seeing tits on the internet. I'm here to read interesting shit AND look at tits.

[–] Sigmatics@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 year ago

This is just one subreddit, how can you even ask this question...

How to pronounce? Red It? Reeeeed iiiiiit

Teens discovering reddit and the nsfw askreddit subs during the pandemic.

[–] jray4559@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

To be frank, a lot of Reddit's "getting hornier" are teens and young adults with autism who have the idea that "haha gay/transgender" qualifies as a meme to be posted everywhere and get showered with karma.

Thankfully there's a lot less of that here. (The consistent bent toward politics, though, did carry over without any decrease unfortunately)

[–] porkins@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago

I only use Reddit for porn now since they can’t monetize it.

[–] Xenon@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And that is despite reddit banning a ton of NSFW subreddits over the past few years (or setting them to private).

[–] wildginger@lemmy.myserv.one 7 points 1 year ago

thats probably why this spike is happening.

All sorts of websites are trying to puritan it up by scrubbing away porn and any other ad unfriendly appearances, like youtube with their swear jar.

So when it gets harder to find porn, people start posting more and more about porn in sfw ish subs like askreddit

[–] IanSomnia@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Big boost in teens on reddit during pandemic, but can't do sexy times because lockdown. Come out of lockdown horny af but not so knowledgeable because they couldn't ask their older brother's friend what 3rd base is. Ask reddit. ??? Profit.

Weren't there changes to how NSFW was applied? I remember seeing an increasing amount of erroneously applied NSFW tags in major subs.
