LOL
memes don't give much discussion but news does. And I mean...
A link aggregator for the fediverse.
Don't mind text posts though, keep it up
I can't speak for others, but I know that I'm also much more likely to comment on news posts without so much spin (and that feels like most of the fediverse news links I encounter).
One of the main reasons I got tired of politics on reddit was the agenda-posting / rage bait.
Gotta have more users for text posts. I don't know about you guys but if I see a text post with 10 comments I move on unless I have something good to say. I'm way more likely to get involved if 500 comments are already there. Does this make sense? Probably not, but it's very intuitive.
I prefer the opposite because then it's much more likely to get a response. Something that already has a few hundred or few thousand comments is when I just shitpost snark because it's not even likely to be seen by anyone other than possibly the OP through getting notifications of replies.
the lemmy sorting is way better though, it seems like something can be at the top of hot even if posted late in the lifespan of a post
Yes, it kind of does. Idk why, but I'm very likely to engage on comments, but very unlikely to be the first person to comment on a post. I recognized this the other day when I clicked a post I wanted to comment on, realized there were no comments, and hit the back button. But then I realized how that's kind of dumb, and not great behavior for a fledgling website, so I went back and commented.
I'm here for it,
Oh goodness I'm commenting. I hope this will be a slippery slope for my engagement (without being a detriment to my professional life)
I too prefer to read text posts over articles or videos. But I guess it depends what you follow? My home feed doesnβt have as many articles or videos. Memes sure but I did sign up for that.
I agree with the whole discussion thing so let's engage. I don't really think that we have a higher quality userbase than reddit honestly. You have to be a little more tech inclined to even find your way here. I feel like it's the same thing that happens when you go to university where you will meet a lot of people who just have to be a certain way to even find their way there. I think that lemmy is just way more like minded than a place like reddit. I won't drone on because I think you get it. So if you want to call that 'higher quality' then I agree. Discussion for the point of discussion I suppose
I notice that I tend to do light remarks first -- test the waters, you know? Most of the time, IMO, OP just want a light hearted talk, or validation of some kind.
I do agree with the text posts though, and probably would be great to learn from/ contribute to an in-depth talk.
Agreed, also shameless plug for !CasualConversation@lemmy.world (you have to allow bots to see the daily thread)
You know what's cool? Sometimes I get responses on my comments from people that clearly just want to have a conversation. I've been conditioned by like buttons and snarky quips for so long that sometimes it takes me a second to stop and realize "oh yeah, I want to have a conversation too! That's why I'm here!". It's pretty neat, and it's something that I've really missed from the old days of the internet (old days? Fuck I'm old and shit). Anyways, I agree with you, we benefit from more meaningful conversations here, and I'm happy to say that I've seen more of them here than anywhere else on the Internet at the moment. There's a forum I'm a member of (thumpertalk.com) that still has pretty good conversations, but mainly only about single cylinder motorcycles. This place has such a wide variety of interest groups that you can start off talking about cats, and end up talking about deep literature. Pretty cool, guys, pretty cool.
Have you tried sorting by new?
Q U A L I T Γ T S O F F E N S I V E
Yes
I disagree with this sentiment. Lemmy, just as Reddit before it, is a link aggregator, not a forum. This is not a glorified bulletin board, even though it has comments. Text posts are fine, but they are not what I'm here for generally. Discussions can be great on sites like these some times, but if I want to have nuanced conversation with people there are better platforms specifically designed for that.
And honestly, I only see memes taking up like 5-10% of my feed. It was far higher back when I subscribed to !memes@lemmy.ml originally, but that's why I unsubscribed from it. Your experience is going to vary by what community topics you follow

A link aggregator and forum for the fediverse.
It's literally in the first line on the Github page.
What better discussion platforms are you using? Threaded comments with an upvote system are my ideal for this sort of thing.
