seems like it's 97% memes or news articles. i love a good shitpost but this site would be even better with in depth nuanced discussion -- especially with a higher quality userbase than reddit

I've seen some legitimately great points here get lots of downvotes. But they get upvotes too and that's why I hate that most of the good apps for Lemmy have followed the reddit model of combined karma, rather than showing the split karma. It's terrible for conversations. There's a big psychological difference between a post with -15 karma, vs a post with 200 upvotes and 215 downvotes.

You say most good apps. Are there any that don't do it? It's one of the reasons I don't use apps for Lemmy.

Jerboa didn't when I was using it. It's a pretty good app, it's just missing a lot of filtering functionality.
