Ron Swanson was many things, but not a complete idiot.
Yup, more like a 2003 era Republican, the type who still had some neurons left.
Ron Swanson, as much as he hated government, loved his friends more.
He would have fought literal tooth and nail to protect Tom from getting deported.
I'm mixed on whether he would have supported DOGE. There's an entire episode where he's on record of "slashing the budget with a machete" but in that same episode sacrificing his job to save Leslie.
There’s an entire episode where he’s on record of “slashing the budget with a machete” but in that same episode sacrificing his job to save Leslie.
That pretty much captures the Republican ideal in a nutshell: Think that the world is simple and have no empathy for the other side, until it personally affects them and suddenly they are for gay rights, or trans rights, or unemployment, or Social Security, or whatever is being debated.
More often it's them thinking that they, and the once they care about, should be exempt from the heinous rules they support. Because they are just good people in a bad situation.
They don't think that the actual rules should be changed.
he would have said "They're expanding the government to slash the government - just slash the budget!"
he would like it in concept but suddenly not when musk leads it and especially not when it cuts the park system and upsets his friends
Tom is from South Carolina. There was a whole plotline about him marrying a Canadian woman so she could get a green card.
Oh I wholeheartedly know.
But ICE has and continues to arrest citizens. Not sure if they have gone through with trying to deport them but Trump is on record saying that he wants to be able to deport "undesirable" citizens.
So yeah....Tom might be from South Carolina but he's on the lower half of the Peter Griffin skin color chart.
The rest of the cast often seems to forget that, so the plotline could still work
Ron wouldn't have voted at all. Voting would mean accepting the government had control over his life.
He would have voted. He would have written in "The reanimated head of Theodore Roosevelt".
I think Leslie probably would have convinced him to
He would’ve voted but continued to insist to Leslie that he didn’t because he wouldn’t want her to feel like she won.
My thought as well, which isn't much better, tbh.
I never knew how much of a progressive Nick Offerman was. I’m glad he’s sensible, has empathy and compassion, and truly cares for others. This was a great read and really makes me proud. I never got the vibe that Ron Swanson would have voted for Trump, because Ron was always a good man at heart.
I recently read about Samuel L Jackson thanks to Lemmy, and found out in his Rolling Stone interview he is also a progressive, hates Trump, and not only is great friends with but stuck up for Brie Larson for all the hate she got.
I don’t like following celebrities, but these are two good persons that can lead by example. We desperately need good role models.
You should watch his episode in The Last Of Us season 1, nobody not progressive would have taken that role and he knocked it out of the park.
One of the best single episodes of TV I've seen in my life.
Came here to say this
Thanks, that’s really good to hear as I only know his part in Parks and Rec and loved that show. Haven’t watched TLOU yet since I want to play the game first. Planning on playing it in fall this year.
TBF that's the best order to do it in ... the game is good but of it's age a bit on the gameplay, but the series is something special and not hurt by playing the game (whereas the other way would be a let down IMO)
He wrote a book a while ago called 'Paddle Your Own Canoe', it's where I learned he is really not like Ron Swanson at all, outside of the woodworking. It's funny how many people think he believes the same things a character he played does.
He genuinely does seem like a very good person and role model.
I never watched Parks & Rec, only knew of Offerman from the memes. I was also surprised to learn he was progressive. On an unrelated note, his role in HBO's The Last of Us was great!
Do a new episode where ICE, BP, and the Marines raid a park hosting a children's event and a farmer's market and show them who Ron really is.
Swanson absolutely despised government interference. He would be fit to be tied.
Nick is absolutely based as an actor and philosophical eapouser as well. He dropped the word mountebank in his interview which is just chef's kiss
