Does what's in the picture look like way more than 20k to anyone else?

In case anyone was curious:

I’m sure all those buildings are; well designed, well constructed, fully furnished and, well staffed ;-)

They are surpressed culturally they are not too stupid to build things.

[slow clap]

I’m not picking on the people… hell, hopefully this project brings a bit of prosperity to the region. Down side, Russian tourists are a handful — search “what air defense doing” for someone awesome memes 😉

Probably the suggestion is related to authoritarian corruption, rather than average intelligence.

I think that if the glorious leader really believes in the project, them it may getsonw reasonably well, so it should be safe.

Yeah and one thing autoritarian regimes are known for is sufficient oversight and regulatory rigour!

They are a piss poor insular dictatorship, it is reasonable to expect lacking standards and outdated methodologies as they do not have sufficient investment for cutting edge processes.

On top of that, there will likely be a lot of foreign contractors without much pressure to produce quality results.

I think it's insensitive that you choose to dunk on the USA in a thread about North Korea.

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And of course someone had to mention the US...

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

fair but i mean you guys are relevant in half the worlds history, and not in a good way.

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Chaps my ass that people constantly assume everyone is an American. You know there's other countries out there too??

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

chaps my ass that people assume people can only be americans if they come from the us too but i digress.

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

You made a false assumption about where I'm from and get annoyed that I use the common denonym for it? Lol

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (1 children)

not really, just saying. stuff like this happens.

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Wouldn't happen if you don't assume

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (1 children)

assuming is part of the game. a lot of wrong assumptions were made of me in this forum. its ok.

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

It just feels too USA-centric imo

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 1 points 39 minutes ago* (last edited 12 minutes ago)

i agree, its kind of shitty. to be fair this habit was more accurate on reddit, but lemmy is thankfully much more diverse than that.

[–] Laser@feddit.org 7 points 1 day ago

Yeah like that navy warship a month ago. Cultural suppression in action

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 3 points 1 day ago

No, but they are smart enough not to put in too much effort.

[–] bobo1900@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They probably are, have you seen videos from western tourists in NK? They have super luxurious hotels costantly empty because there are at most a handful of people at one time. They really really want to be perceived as modern and civlized so they throw ludicrous amount of money to their ridicule tourism industry so they hope to attract foreigners. Of course this is done at the expense of their citizens

[–] sramder@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

This guy watches Exploring the Unbeaten Path :-)

[–] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

NK needs foreign money. They can't afford to cheap out that.

[–] sramder@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

Bruh… they can’t afford to do anything but cheap out. It’s slow motion genocide. With nukes.

[–] frunch@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I imagine it would be like a taste of home to the Russian tourists, given the hospitality provided to the athletes when they hosted the Olympics in 2014

[–] sramder@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

You couldn’t pay me to be an Olympic athlete these days ;-)

  • Toilets that don’t flush
  • Toilets that do flush, but the outflow is just a ditch behind the “dorms”
  • Cipro required for a brief swim in the… we’re doing what now? Am I in the wrong line?
  • Seriously, I’m an olympic swimmer… o-l-y-m-p-i-c not the X-Games™???
