I have a some very close friends who are Venezuelan. They all claim they aren't worried because they are citizens, but I'm not so sure. The MAGA Nazis don't respect Birthright Citizenship, they certainly aren't going to respect naturalization.

Bottom line: If you were born somewhere else, they want you gone.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 6 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

I left because I knew they'd be coming for me sooner rather than later. I'm a trans immigrant. I honestly kinda regret my citizenship because it's keeping me chained to the reich even from abroad.

[–] match@pawb.social 3 points 1 hour ago

And birthright citizenship is under attack too.

[–] Vanilla_PuddinFudge@infosec.pub 5 points 2 hours ago

A cousin and a friend. Yeah, it crosses my mind.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 23 points 7 hours ago (3 children)

Every time I hear sirens, I feel scare af, thinking its the gestapo.

I'm a naturalized citizen btw, but I still don't feel safe (I'm not white).

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 8 points 2 hours ago

I'm white AF, and my family has been here since the 1650s on one side, and 1720s on the other side. We literally funded a decent portion of the revolution. I'm still scared. They are coming for everyone that isn't them.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Don't worry, they won't arrive in uniforms with sirens. They'll arrive silently in masks.

[–] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 10 points 7 hours ago

Hell, even birthright citizens aren't safe if they are perceived as non-white.

[–] weremacaque@sh.itjust.works 12 points 8 hours ago

I have a friend from the Philippines who is in school to be a nurse. When this started, she was scared this was going to affect students which did end up being true later.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 34 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

That is a sharp fucking rise for three months.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Isn't there a german word for it, blitzkrieg?

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

"Blitzkrieg" is literally "lightning war", and just refers to the style of offense the Germans used against other European countries in WWII, which was largely responsible for their early military success.

Armies at that time relied on stationary positions and slow logistics, horse-drawn carriages for a large portion. The Germans just blitzed into France, through the Maginot line.

Which makes me wonder whether the current idea of MAD holding off war isn't as deluded as relying on the Maginot line. I sure hope it isn't.

Anyway this is more just fascism in general. A fast rise in authoritarianism. Not "war" in the classical sense, although it certainly is basically war.

[–] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 25 points 14 hours ago

Nearly everyone close to me voted for Trump. I fucking hope they get deported.

[–] ThePiedPooper@discuss.online 5 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

Anyone who thinks that protesting will stop this is an idiot. Hypothetically, if you wanted to stop this, either you put on a FULL ON general strike, not 200,000 people, but 20 million. Or you go and get your guns, and start driving the fuck over to your state capitol, or better yet, the WH.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 32 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

TIL 3 out of 4 Americans need to get out more.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 17 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

I mean 2 out of 4 believe the other 2 should be deported. 1 of those 2 don’t know that someone is trying to deport them. That’s the current state of America and how Trump got elected.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

yeah but all 3 just don't realize someone they know will get deported. first they came for the socialists, and all that.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

The socialists weren't even the first people they came for

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 138 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Since there are no rules and no due process 4 of 4 should be worried. If you think this isnt gonna escalate you are nuts.

[–] veggay@kbin.earth 38 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

@njm1314@lemmy.world 3 out of 4 US adults are nuts

Unless something happened it was always going to escalate. The question was ever only the cause and whether any side would meet that escalation with their own. I started asking something similar during Covid and was told people didn't want to risk someone spitting on them. I said it again after January 6th and people replied that they didn't want to be targets by some psycho. A year ago when this started to become clear I asked why we weren't out on the streets reminding the DNC what we need and I got the same answer then I've gotten in the past: I can't take off of work/I need to pay my bills.

So, my friends, is this enough yet?

[–] TommySoda@lemmy.world 24 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Most of them are in denial. Every time I bring it up to my friends they're all like "yeah, but they won't come after me."

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

You will need to keep that hand iced. Maybe splint at night. If the skin breaks, get an ACE wrap.

Sorry, that sounds like a possibly risky amount of slapping you've been up to lately, especially if you've been (like most of us) in a low or no-slap lifestyle up until now.

[–] pawnfuture@lemmy.world 14 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

The videos all over the internet expose everything. I can't imagine what it looks like from a normal country on the outside.

[–] Aliktren@lemmy.world 8 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Horrifying and you are all apparently just complaining about on social media ( yes there have been a few protests, big whoop)

[–] KMAMURI@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

I protest once a month on a sunny Saturday that I don't have errands or TV to catch up on.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 28 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Have a coworker with family in Iran. She just got her citizenship, but I have no idea how much that is even worth in the modern moment.

She's a close friend and it was be a personal nightmare to lose her to some ICE thugs.

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 22 points 15 hours ago

They shipped out Kilmar Abrego Garcia for something a cop said in 2019 based on an unidentified informant and they make up new lies about him all the time. They're absolutely not above lying that someone falsified information on their naturalization papers.

[–] pawnfuture@lemmy.world 11 points 14 hours ago

Ogle and Mace sent an email asking to denaturalize primary winner of NYC. They'll try and if they succeed they'll do it to other people.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 36 points 19 hours ago

Imagine what it's doing to their children. Republicans and religious people who have a hand in this or turn a blind eye are filth. There's no redemption for this.

[–] CaliforniaSober@lemmy.ca 15 points 19 hours ago (11 children)

But fuck all if they could be bothered to vote…

[–] fosho@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 hour ago

butt fuck all!

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 19 points 18 hours ago (14 children)

Pew’s latest study suggests that Trump would have won even if they all voted.

Mostly because the majority of Americans seem to be OK with face eating leopards.
