Governor Tim Walz condemns ‘politically motivated assassination’ as search continues for Vance Luther Boelter

A prominent Democratic state lawmaker in Minnesota and her husband were killed and another Democratic state lawmaker and his wife were shot in the early hours of Saturday.

State representative Melissa Hortman died, as has her husband, Mark, the state’s governor, Tim Walz, confirmed at a press conference on Saturday. Walz said the shooting “appears to be a politically motivated assassination”. Hortman was the top Democrat in the Minnesota house and the former speaker. The Democratic state senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were both shot multiple times and are out of surgery, and Walz said he was “cautiously optimistic” both will survive.

The suspect was still at large, police said on Saturday, and the suburb of Brooklyn Park was under a shelter-in-place order as checkpoints were set up through the town. Police lifted a shelter-in-place order in the afternoon, saying they had reason to believe the suspect was no longer in the area. The shooter was impersonating a police officer, and was dressed in a uniform that would appear to be real to most people, police said.

Why isn't this guy getting the same level of heat that the Adjuster got?

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 21 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

Also why is the media not labeling this what it was an assassination? They did for that garbage ceo.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 15 points 21 hours ago

They went even further and called it terrorism.

The media is labelling it an assassination. CNN had it in a headline without quotes. So does NYT. So do most other articles that come up when I look up the shooting. Good grief, get off your "media sucks" bandwagon and look around.

I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count.

See, the thing is that everyone is capable of harbouring the same level of hate but oh my fucking god it’s really just the conservatives who only seem to have one response to it, which is brazen violence. Every single thing they do is always an unnuaced, scorched-earth piece of bullshit because they aren’t smart enough to fix anything or create a better alternative so they just throw it out while throwing a tantrum. Whether they’re killing people or departments or regulations, they always just assume things will be better if they let chaos take over because they are too moronic to make anything work no matter how clear the instructions are.

And all these death threats and acts of violence, attempts on the lives of politicians, screaming for deporting people they don’t like, they’re all great examples of how worthless these people are. No matter how worthless they are I’d still make sure they got healthcare in a better world while they’d keep wishing I was dead or mute until I said things they liked.

The right can't create. Nothing. No art, no music, no writing. It's all garbage. I think it's an empathy thing.

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago

Definitely. I know stupid and smart people who are good or bad, poor and rich, introverted and extroverted, and healthy and sick, but conservatives have a monopoly on the group that lacks empathy which can go beyond the people they can see right in front of them.

And it’s sad, because I know some conservatives who really are givers but if they don’t personally know the other person they immediately fall into the same old nonsense. It’s such an underdeveloped sense for them.

If God created man in the image of God, and these people can't create, are they human?

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 2 points 21 hours ago

That's up to people who believe in god.

I hope this guy is caught, arrested, and prosecuted. I have no doubts his mind is full of the whole spectrum of maga christofascist psychosis, and I hope we get to see all of that on full display.

The more awareness the country has of how deeply disturbed, and corrupt, Christian fundamentalism is, the better.

Stripper cops are ok though. In fact, the end goal is to disrobe such an oppressive uniform; A metamorphosis to molt an uncomfortable layer to reveal their true form.

[–] narr1@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"impersonating a police officer" uhhuh sure buddy

[–] curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 32 points 1 day ago (2 children)

In this case, yes. Vance Boelteris the suspected murderer, an evangelical who also did private security (among other... Weird things).

The vehicle he drove was black with lights on top styled after the police, and had a plate that said "Police" on it.

He is not, however, a police officer, and never has been.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So, basically this guy did what ICE does all the time

[–] curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yup!

All the more reason ICE needs to be stopped.

Edited to add: there was even a recent robbery where the guy pretended to be ICE.

Impersonation is being made so much easier due to ICE.

[–] narr1@lemmy.ml -4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

so he was in all ways - except ~~physical~~ legal - a cop?

[–] curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

All the ways except actually being a cop?

Yes. He is not, was not, and has never been a cop.

[–] narr1@lemmy.ml -2 points 22 hours ago

it was a reference to that one real old meme, but I see you aren't interested in such fantastical subjects. But yes, of course, we should never claim that this crazed lone wolf right wing gun nut was the same as all the others inhabiting the US police force, because they are more organized than that. Anyway, class traitors and bastards, were thebadgelegit or not.

[–] painfulasterisk1@lemmy.ml 6 points 21 hours ago

Are you telling me that they haven't captured the Minnesota terrorist?
