Of the following, which of the two personality types do you generally align with?

When approaching a given situation or idea, do you typically focus on details first, or start with the bigger picture, filling in details second?

Edit for clarity: I'm not asking anyone to strictly identify with one or the other. It's a question of where on the spectrum between them you fall.

I am more of a big picture person and my partner is more of a details first person.

I form my personality for the sole purpose of thwarting anyone who tries to subdue the divinity of the human mind the way OP does

That is a false dichotomy. Every situation has unique context.

Blunt delivery, but I agree. We've been programmed by pop psychology to think our personality traits fit in neat categories, but in reality it's all grey area

It seems like you are missing the point of what the other user was trying to say.

So I'll give you my post answer here instead, since it fits just as well:

It Depends On Each Situation.

I might lean more towards a big picture person for some issues but more towards details first for other issues. My current state (health, fatigue, emotions) can also influence these so that I would lean more towards one end of your spectrum in a certain situation but then I might lean towards the other end in the same situation but, say, I'm now not fatigued or maybe I'm starving.

It depends.

I feel like I understand what they said, but maybe I'm not wording my question right.

Imagine that I'm asking whether you like blue more or green more. I'm not asking you what your favorite color is, or what color you'd paint your car, but generally which one of those two colors you tend to see yourself liking more.

[โ€“] actionjbone@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The context totally changes the question.

"Which do you like more, blue or green?" is very different from "Which do you feel you are, a blue-liker or a green-liker?"

The first question directly asks a specific thing.

The second is asking what category a person feels they belong to. And assigning a category implies many things in addition to liking the color.

I think you hit the nail on the head. It's being made about hypothetical implications, instead of being taken at face value....

Here's another one: Are you more of a silly person or a serious person?

There are implications to both, and few would self identify as strictly one or the other, but I can easily see which side I tend to align with without labeling myself a "Serious/Silly Person"

It's really blowing my mind that this concept isn't more intuitive. (I've had this conversation with a family member who has a view very similar to yours)

I don't approach situations, they approach me and chaos ensues.

You know trouble's coming when The Situation starts to flex.

I figure the last 3% of details to have the situation go perfectly are within the scope of luck and preparation. I typical start big and focus down as progress battles the solution.
