But I really like how Firefox mobile handles tabs right now..

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

My ♾️ tabs suggests Firefox does not, in fact, manage them.

[–] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 3 points 2 days ago

on the longer term it only keeps the last few tabs half-open. all the rest goes to the inactive tabs, which I guess are completely unloaded

[–] ReluctantZen@feddit.nl 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I suppose I don't have more than 100 tabs open

What's new about it? The screenshot looks like my Firefox looks already, and it's been this way for a long time. Did I maybe forget signing up to test beta features??

  • The top navigation bar has changed.
  • The new title.
  • It's no longer a bottom sheet.

Oh, I see. Thank you. The differences were too subtle for me, and I only just now learned what a bottom sheet is! :)

Still, it doesn't seem a very significant change. I'm neither pleased nor upset by it, but rather wondering what the point is. Maybe the cosmetic changes are simply a small addition to more important changes under the hood?

To be honest, the tabs tray is mostly just cosmetic changes. The under the hood changes were done last year. That said, there's still some significant changes with things being consolidated, which makes management easier. There's a lot of work being put in to make Firefox feel and act like more of a first-class citizen on Android.

Are you on the nightly beta?

[–] stray@pawb.social 1 points 16 hours ago

It looks like that's a different app, so no. OP pointed out some subtle differences though. It's roughly the same, but with the layout altered slightly. I think it probably looks like a more drastic change to those not already using the grid view; I had forgotten list was even an option.

[–] squirrel@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That looks like Chrome... I hope we get the choice to keep tabs the way they are now.

[–] sabreW4K3@lazysoci.al 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The Mozilla designers are pandering to what the masses find familiar, so expect lots of inspiration from Chrome and iOS, for better or worse.

That said, I suspect that while grid is the default, list view will still be available for super users.

I'm just disappointed that there's no indication of tab groups in this preview.

It's just sad that Firefox is so insecure about being an individual and forward thinking in design. Not to mention the disrespect of the lifelong users who ask for cool features that would improve FF. Instead, they are so desperate to be Chrome. The end of Firefox will be Mozilla. Chrome users don't like you and FF users are ignored.

With all due respect, designers design, coders implement and managers make decisions.

The UI has needed a refresh for a while and as they've updated the UI to move away from legacy implementations, they're switching to newer and faster implementations that allow for features to be implemented. Prime example, before switching the tabs tray to compose, private tabs couldn't even be rearranged.

Everyone wants new features and thinks they just pop up out of nowhere and reality dictates that it's not that easy.

Currently they're in the middle of getting the new menu and toolbars to look and work correctly. Using a design that isn't available in Chrome.

I wish people would see a therapist about their Mozilla angst or at least get well enough informed to talk actual factual shit

pls just give us a tablet ui with a tab bar 😭

[–] noodlejetski@piefed.social 4 points 2 days ago

it's currently in Beta. used to be available as a hidden toggle in Stable, but not anymore.

[–] Carighan@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

That's quite posh, nice! 🥰

[–] Blisterexe@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Oh thank god, that looks so much better than what we have now

[–] PlexSheep@infosec.pub 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I think that is in my Firefox already, and I don't like it. I'm not a tab hoarder, but on mobile, I want stuff to remain open for a bit longer.

you can disable tabs closing automatically or setting them as inactive in Firefox settings.

screenshot of tab options in Firefox for Android, showing options to switch between list and grid layout, an option to close tabs automatically after a day, a week, a month, or manually, and a toggle to set tabs as inactive if they haven't been viewed two weeks

[–] PlexSheep@infosec.pub 1 points 2 days ago

Good to know thanks

It's been available for a long time. You can disable it.
