"Streaming is dead" say the people who killed it.

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 10 points 1 week ago

Yes but they're rich now

Right? The streaming Star wars IP even book of Boba Fett and Obi Wan series were light-years better than anything Disney put in theaters save maybe Rogue One. I have a feeling they are going to fuck up Mandalorian with the Grogu and Mandalorian theatrical release too. Once it reaches the box office, there's too many cooks messing with the creators vision imo. We'll see I guess.

Yep I'm not watching a film, I doubt they'll do it well

Streaming is dead

I guess this means it doesn't create the income they want?

Meanwhile $NFLX at all time high currently.

No idea where that valuation is coming from but I guess they are winning the streaming wars.

While netflix does quantity over quality, it does give you a lot more stuff to watch without additional charge compared to brand-limited services like Disney and Apple, so more people still gravitate to them.

[–] Sibbo@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well, netflix has a variety of stuff. I don't know why anyone thinks that people would be fine with watching nothing but Disney.

Have you ever met a Disney fanatic? I've been in a relationship with one. I haven't been in a relationship with one in almost 20 years. I learned my lesson.

[–] phdepressed@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Yeah, but Disney fanatics are a minority. Sure they'll buy stuff and they'll get the streaming too but there aren't enough of them alone to make streaming profitable enough for Disney.

It means they know they can't beat Netflix, and that the streaming monopoly is out of reach for everybody else. Without that monopoly, they can't raise prices to the points they want.

Streaming is dead? What, are we back to laserdisc and nobody told me?

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There's leveling viewer rates and an increase in torrents so yeah, it is sorta dying because no one likes playing 90 dollars for 7 subscriptions that still don't get you every show you want to watch.

[–] LadyButterfly@lazysoci.al 1 points 4 days ago

Plus having to pay more to miss ads! I'm already paying them ffs

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

What they mean is not that people aren't streaming. Its that the profit margins in streaming are reaching a plateau so investors can't profit nearly as much or as easily.

I'm actually considering buying shows on Blu-ray and then ripping them into my media server. But Blu-rays are super expensive compared to paying for streaming for s few months, and I never know if I'll actually watch something completely before I even start.

You can go to your local thrift store and get DVD Videos and Blu-rays.

I get all my blank media from there.

[–] Lighttrails@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

Your local library may also have a collection of movies and shows available for checkout. CDs too

[–] boaratio@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I don't think I own a single device that can play optical discs.

[–] LadyButterfly@lazysoci.al 2 points 4 days ago

Me neither.

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I keep a dvd burner in my closet next to the USB floppy drive. Haven't used either in at least 5 years

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Does this mean subscriber numbers are not what the Mouse expected to be?

Cancelled disney+ subscriptions and way less travel to their playlands hurts the bottom line.
