I had a fake credit card account opened for me by Wells Fargo. It caused me to accidentally transfer money to the wrong account (from savings to the credit card), so I tried moving the -$10 from the credit card to my checking account, and then I was charged a cash advance fee, and then an overdraft fee. The class action settlement money didn't even cover one of the fees πŸ™ƒ

[–] Bananigans@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago

On the bright side, if they do it to you again, they're now able to charge even more for the overdraft fees.

A) This should have be resolved with prison time. They knew what they were doing.

B) If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and switch to a credit union. They are a thousand times better.

[–] creamlike504@jlai.lu 7 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Agreed. A pox on every bank that charges a ~~monthly service fee~~ ~~a low balance fee~~ a poverty tax.

My last credit union charged me an inactivity fee. Listen, my fault, but lets not pretend its a different breed. Its a less influential breed, and usually more financially beneficial to us poors.

To be clear for us here in the US yea credit union greater than bank. But you still need to be aware and watch fees and shop around.

I really feel like if the general public applied Finnish bartending practices more frequently, the number of business willing to do, or existing after doing this kind of shit, would rapidly diminish.

[–] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 10 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Care to share what that entails?

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

The Russian's were dropping "gift baskets" on the Finns. So the Finns brought "cocktails" for the party. Hopefully that clarifies the situation.

If you're scared of a .world ban just go to a different instance ffs. This isn't reddit where you are locked down to one set of rules. You can pick which ones you want.

I don't think even the most power-tripping Lemmy admin is going to rendition my ass to a slave prison in El Salvador.

Even the 8.5m was just a tiny tax on doing business

Why were these fuckers not jailed for years?

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

you get what you ask for. there is still a large chunk of people in the US who think that taxing and punishing big corporations are ultimately bad for the low-income people (cuz they put folks ta woerk)

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 36 points 20 hours ago

Just a reminder that there were harsher penalties for downloading a single song.

Although, the Trump admin did explicitly say they were going to de-prioritize prosecuting white-collar crime.

Not enough political will from the masses. Too busy being mad about immigrants and trans people.

Also the police are the enthusiastic bootlickers of capital, and people don't want to get shot at after marching into a CEO's office and throwing him out the 20th story window.

Friendly reminder that Wells Fargo is a crime syndicate masquerading as a bank. They committed mass identity theft against their own customers and got a slap on the wrist.

I like Bill Burr’s bit on how corporate is the mafia of yore, it’s just legally sanctioned now.

Remember back in 2016 when he ran on β€œdrain the swamp?”

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

i guess you shouldn't trust a promise like that when it comes directly from the most swamp creature lookin ass motherfucker you've ever seen... apart from Steve Bannon

[–] zephorah@lemm.ee 2 points 11 hours ago

Rumor is he smells swampy too.

[–] dustyData@lemmy.world 30 points 23 hours ago

Well, you see. When you drain a swamp, it means you get rid of the clean water, and all you are left with is mud and rotting matter. So, I think he is succeeding.

[–] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Trump is draining the "swamp". Too bad the swamp was all the decent people in government.

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 2 points 19 hours ago

Swamp was an metaphor for your finances

I hadn't heard of this but it looks like snopes has an acceptable write up. They do state that no one has come out and said it was a quid pro quo, but no other reason was given. Just leaving the link here in case other people are interested.

ETA: to be clear Trump and his admin are obviously corrupt. I just wasn't aware of the particulars of this situation.

[–] arf@lemmy.today 1 points 20 hours ago

Appreciate you doing the research. I cannot stand Trump and his cronies, but there's been so much rage bait and sensationalist headlines over the past year that it's hard to paint a coherent picture of what the hell is actually going on.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 2 points 19 hours ago

thats capitalism in general. in my country, i'm tired of seeing this shit from """progressives""" too (no such thing in capitalism either, but you get what i'm saying)
