Drawn Together was hilarious. It ended because sponsors were too uncomfortable advertising alongside it. It could never get made today.

I don't see Aeon Flux mentioned yet. The Maxx is very good too. Duckman I remember being hilarious, but I dunno if starring Jason Alexander counts as a deep cut.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago

I'll 1 up you and go with Liquid Television, where Aeon Flux started-- like Tracy Ulman & the Simpsons.

12 oz. Mouse. Twelve is also the number of fans the show has.

Edit: shoutout to !12ozmouse@adultswim.fan where I am the only person who posts.

All I remember of that show was catching it on a VHS after I left it recording to grab squidbillies one night, and there was a scene of a shark trying to start a car for a really, really long time, which was pretty damn funny.

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 days ago

That's a great episode lol

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

“You barely piece of suck-ass car.”

[–] GrabtharsHammer@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

That show is so dang good.

I remember loving this show as a kid! I still laugh when I think about "douchebag" written in cursive.

All of the adult swim shows like ATHF, Brak Show, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Squidbillies, Home Movies, Metalocalypse, Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, Sealab 2021, and probably a few others I can't remember. Also, not animated but I would put Sifl & Olly in the mix because it fucking rocks.

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 2 days ago

Everybody should check out the adultswim.fan instance which has communities for all these shows as well as general ones like !adultswim@adultswim.fan and !tv_film@adultswim.fan

[–] badbrainstorm@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Heck yeah to all these!

I had a black cat with green eyes I named Sifl. Got attitude from quite a few people about what TF was wrong with me for naming a cat after syphilis...

Hoops is a recent one that cracked my shit up, and I was bummed didn't get another season of two

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

Fritz the Cat. Not to be confused with Felix the Cat. Fritz the Cat was, essentially, an adults only version of Felix. And by adult only I mean pornographic.

I'm also not seeing anyone mention Mission Hill so throw that onto the pile. It's hella good.

Also Clone High.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

A lot of things listed here are earler works from well-known creators, like Clone High (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump St, Sealab 2021 (Archer), Bravest Warriors (Adventure Time), Home Movies (Metalocalypse, Squid Billies).

Extra shoutout to China, IL. Love all the oldet Professir Bros. stuff on YouTube, like Roleplaying Tornament and Queeblo that I still sing all the time

Anyone else remember the Oblongs?

Not really animated but not really not-animated.

The Fuccons. they're Fuccon fantastic!

1000001497

edit: I did some more digging on The Fuccons and they were a short episodic skit on a longer running Japanese show called "Vermilion Pleasure Night". it's a really good representation of early 2000s adult entertainment humor highly niche but entertaining enough with dark humor.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Oh my god I thought this was Angela Anaconda. I fucking hate this animation style.

[–] RedEyeFlightControl@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

SlackerCats - obscure, ran for half a season

Clerks The Animated Series - obscure, ran for half a season

Carol and the end of the world (Mainstream but wildly serene, surreal, and overtly human)

Moral Oral - pretty dark adult show

Ren and Stimpy - pretty dark for a kids show

I'm sure I'll think of a few more

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (4 children)

I'm surprised Ren and Stimpy made it in the obscure list. They were about as popular as anything when they were on.

[–] RedEyeFlightControl@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Not so obscure, but very dark. This was a kids show on Nickelodeon after all. Have you watched it?

The adult party cartoon might be obscure enough to make the list.

[–] glitchy_nobody@leminal.space 6 points 2 days ago

Ralph Bakshi made an animated series for HBO called Spicy City. It is very adult, and not something I see mentioned often.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

My journey into queer media started with Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World. If you've never seen it, I'm not sure what to tell you but you should.

Also just looked it up and Alan Cumming and Margaret Cho did voices in it? I gotta rewatch that shit.

Also shout out to Yvon of the Yukon cause ytv was just why (the fuck) tv actually.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

If you're going to list Space Ghost you have to have the Herculoids.

Sit down, shut up. Jason Bateman, will forte, and will arnette are high school teachers. It lasted one season with fox giving it random timeslots.

I mean that was advertised like crazy on comedy Central when it was on the air.

Same with the Oblongs when it was on adult swim. They had Will Ferrell on the show.

I wasn't into Megas XLR but it was part of cartoon Fridays when I was in school and probably belongs in this list.

You can't list Oblongs, Undergrads, and Clone High without mentioning Mission Hill.

Chilly Beach is probably a deep cut for non-Canadians. I most often saw it described as Canadian South Park.

I'm not sure if it counts as obscure but Invader Zim also aired around this time.

Going back a bit further, there was Duckula, where the latest in a line of vampiric ducks was resurrected using ketchup instead of blood and became a vegetable vampire.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes was made into a cartoon of questionable suitability for children.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

+1 for Mission Hill. Bling Blong.

Adding a few more of questionable obscurity, idk if these are well known or not, since many of the ones OP posted I thought were well known. So that'll have to be judged independently but at least these all are good and sorta fit.

Assy McGee

Celebrity Deathmatch (claymation, I count it.)

Harvey Birdman

Home Movies

Sealab 2021

Stripperella

Xavier Renegade Angel

Also if it doesn't have to be "adult" (Billy and Mandy on OG list) then add:

KaBlam!

Freakazoid!
