Hong Kong’s postal service will stop handling packages coming from or going to the United States, in the latest retaliatory move amid an escalating trade war between Washington and Beijing.

In a statement published Wednesday announcing the decision, the government of Hong Kong cited US President Donald Trump’s decision last week to eliminate the so-called de minimis exception for items posted from the city to the US. The exemption applied to international shipments worth $800 or less entering the US.

“The US is unreasonable, bullying and imposing tariffs abusively,” the government said in the statement. “The public in Hong Kong should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the US’s unreasonable and bullying acts.”

The government said the postal service, Hongkong Post, will stop accepting packages transported by sea with immediate effect and stop taking airborne packages starting from April 27. Other postal items containing only documents, for example letters, will not be affected.

We're running on the beta version of democracy, we don't have that feature

Qaddafi was recalled

There was no “democratic mechanism” for it.

There was a democratic consensus tho

This is why I placed a large order for hobby parts like esp boards and led strips last month when he tried to kill trade with China. I knew he would try to fuck us over and kill trade completely. Just got my last package today so I am set to build shit until I can find a local source.

This is such a pain for us makers, inventors, and enthusiasts.

Stupid economy-destroying pissing game aside, I wonder if this bullshit will be a net positive for the environment. Fewer rare minerals mined, fewer gas/coal-sucking boats making the trip across the ocean full of single-use plastic products and fast fashion, etc.

America will make up for it somehow. With the way we're cutting regulations here, our environment will be loaded with heavy metals and carcinogens in no time.

Ugh, you’re so right. I was hoping to find a silver lining and there isn’t one.

From a Gen-X point of view:

Boomers: "We had post WWII proxy wars and the Red Scare."

Gen-X: "We had The Cold War and Y2K."

Millennials: "We had 9-11 and constant conflict in the Middle East."

Younger generations now: "WTAF is going on?!?!"

To be fair, we won’t have another y2k until 2038.

Then teach the younger generation about what is going on instead of shitting on them

Edit: sorry to op, I had a reading comprehension fail

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I don't see anyone shitting on younger generations.

All I see is someone expressing what many in the younger generation are feeling. Like everything the older generations faced is happening again. Like the world is on fire and everyone is pretending it's fine. And they're wondering why nobody is as concerned as they are.

In other words, "WTAF is going on?!?!"

[–] Fingolfinz@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Ah i see, i think i had a reading comprehension fail and just misinterpreted it, thats on me

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It happens. I've definitely read a sentence, took it the wrong way, and only after rereading it later on (usually when someone responds to my comment) that I was incorrect.

[–] Fingolfinz@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Yeah I’m guilty of it a bit more than I’d like to be, it’s wild how that happens haha. Upon a second reading I’ll just be like, where the hell was I when I was first reading that

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

At first I read "postal" as "portal" lmao

[–] Ste41th@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 hour ago

Yeah they stopped that too

wait I think I said too much
