The Trump administration is considering launching drone strikes on drug cartels in Mexico as part of an ambitious effort to combat criminal gangs trafficking narcotics across the southern border, according to six current and former U.S. military, law enforcement and intelligence officials with knowledge of the matter.

I'm just a simple construction worker who's not wise to the world of international geopolitics, but isn't a military strike on a foreign country's sovereign territory usually considered an act of war?

[–] crank0271@lemmy.world 46 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Israel's been apparently getting away with it. (Not justifying it, just providing an example of another imperialist nation who seemingly hasn't been experiencing any consequences from disregarding their neighbors sovereign borders.)

The US is getting away with it on the middle east. Israel is a cautionary tale about why doing on your own doorstep puts your civilian population a risk of retaliation.

in some cases, on the power of the "fuck that other other guy" school of geopolitics, this can be avoided. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Iran%E2%80%93Pakistan_border_skirmishes "you see, we actually targeted separatists" "yeah we also targeted separatists let's call it even" it also requires certain degree of diplomatic finesse that trump lacks, and there's no good reason for strikes in the first place considering that dea coordinated with mexican police (?) previously, so they could just continue doing that

Honestly I think there's plenty of good reasons to go after cartels with more force than just fbi. It's not great having that level of instability and danger right next door. However, we got our own problems right now(trump), and trump does have the ability to do the careful maneuvering that would be needed to do so.

Especially if Mexico agrees it would be okay.

That is generally complicated territory when you attack terrorist/revolutionary groups not affiliated with the state, especially when the latter lost control over the territory those groups are residing in.

But Mexico could do the same with US gangs basically if the US does that one-sidedly. And Mexicans might not like such interventions from the US. After all there is a bad history of legal and illegal US immigrants stealing Mexican territory. Coincidentally that’s also the US state that complains most about Mexican immigrants

Mexico will never agree because they want their sovereignty and more importantly, their government is controlled by the cartels, literally

So.... In turn can mexico drone strike the gun shops that are supplying the cartels?

[–] Albbi@lemmy.ca 28 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just call them 'ammo depots' and you're good to go!

[–] CarnivorousCouch@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

They might even kill some "military aged males!"

[–] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Sounds reasonable to me.

The cartel isn't stupid. They are intertwined in American business and politics. They have a foot in both worlds.

Trump administration ponders starting a war with Mexico.

He's going to kill a lot of innocent people with these.

They’re brown, and the President of Mexico mocked him. So trump’s fine with it. So high on his own power he thinks he can do whatever he wants and all he has to do is threaten repercussions. That’s how trump has operated his entire life. Make demands and threaten when he doesn’t get what he wants.

[–] TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com 10 points 1 week ago

It is weird how Trump et al both hide behind due process while at the very same time pretend that it doesn't exist

If he calls it a “special military operation”… well, that’ll be like the 8th or 9th shark jump in the last 3ish months
