Probably returns to China.

My father once had a funny digital realisation when he (German) phoned his German friend from Australia while not knowing that said friend was in Australia as well.

So the call went from Australia to Germany to look for the German phone and roaming back down to Australia to make the connection. I wonder if the actual signal traveled to Germany and back to Australia or if it is routed locally after establishing where every participant is.

Hopefully he didn't have to pay the long distance fee.

I had a pen pal in Australia when I (an American) was in elementary school.

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

Do you two still communicate?

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm living in western Europe and my family is in Australia, so any letters go a long, long, long way.

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What brought you so far across the world?

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

A tale as old as time. A girl.

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

It's certainly one I see a lot. Though I for one couldn't imagine having a BF traverse the world for me. Imagine if it didn't work out or stand the test of time.

Canada to Congo via France. Not exactly a straight line. Even if we all agree that earth is flat 🤣

Yes, because it was impossible to get a fair price for a direct delivery, or any solution at all.

Letter from central Minnesota US to Australia. Sent it to a friend

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

I've been noticing here Australia tends to be popular as a mailing destination.

[–] DirigibleProtein@aussie.zone 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Australia to Europe, or Australia to United States

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm surprised at all the Australian answers here.

[–] anothermember@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

Why the surprise? My first thought on seeing this was there must be a lot of Australia or New Zealand answers due to the relative geographic isolation of Australia and New Zealand in relation to the rest of the first world.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Germany to the US (California). An order for a software update.

[–] vu2tum@lemmy.radio 3 points 2 months ago

India to Chile ~17000 km. Sent QSL via post to ham radio stations I worked last year.

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

germany to america, or is Dubai farther away from Germany? the latter didn't arrive anyway.

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

It depends on where in America/Dubai.

[–] tiefling@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I used to run an Etsy shop that shipped everywhere from Australia to Europe, so probably Australia

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

Australia seems to be a surprisingly popular answer here.

[–] Libb@jlai.lu 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Like many I imagine: China to where I live (France), back in those days when I ordered too much useless crap online.

[–] Oriion@jlai.lu 2 points 2 months ago

A few letters to my family for Christmas/New year from Japan to France while I was there for an exchange.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Buddy of mine used to teach English in Korea, we sent stuff back and forth all the time.

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

South or North (asking under the impression they still have occasional English teachers in the North)?

My answer would actually relate to North Korea. Dumb younger me thought "if they have no technology, I bet someone there would appreciate being a penpal". In hindsight I fear the results.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah, regular communication with North Korea would likely get you on a list. :)

South Korea.

[–] fedev@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Argentina to Malaysia

[–] CommissarVulpin@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I used to sign up for a penpal thing where we would exchange letters written with a typewriter. One of the guys I wrote to was in Switzerland, we exchanged a couple letters but then he stopped responding.

Maybe I should try doing that again, it was fun.

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Why specifically a typewriter?

[–] CommissarVulpin@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

It’s part of a typewriter discord group I’m in. We’re all looking for excuses to use our typewriters, so writing letters to each other seems logical.

[–] VonReposti@feddit.dk 2 points 2 months ago

Denmark to US. I did walkman and cassette deck repairs before Covid. It was possible to earn a pretty penny by buying broken decks on eBay, fixing them, and then reselling them.

[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

not I but my wife used to make custom my little ponies and many sold in europe for some reason.

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

2D art or do you mean like figurines?

[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 2 points 2 months ago
