Finnish President Alexander Stubb has congratulated his future US counterpart Donald Trump on his re-election.

[...]

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) commented on the election [in a press conference ...] "I have been saying for a long time that Europe must take a bigger role. We cannot count so much on US support. Of course, the United States has other interests," the PM said.

[...]

In Orpo’s view, peace must be achieved in Ukraine, but not under any conditions.

"Peace must be attained on Ukraine's terms," he said. "We have our own experience from history that if the big ones agree over [others'] heads, it is not in the interest of a small or independent nation, and hopefully this will be kept clearly in mind when a peace agreement is possibly made."

[...]

Former president Sauli Niinistö, who met with Trump multiple times, struck a cautious note in regard to the possible ramifications for Nato and Ukraine.

On Wednesday, Niinistö commented to Yle about Trump’s assertion that he will end the war in Ukraine quickly.

"I haven't seen a detailed plan on the matter, if there is one. Rather, that will have to be considered after we see what he is really going to do," Niinistö said.

Right the fuck now Europe needs to eliminate or at least HIGHLY reduce dependency on America in all fields

[–] sunbeam60@lemmy.one 2 points 6 hours ago

That doesn’t come without a larger role for the EU and good f***** luck trying to get the MEGAs to agree to that.

I’m from Scandinavia and I hope to f*** we are actively working on a pan-Scandinavian defense treaty (it could exist within the NATO framework until NATO collapses) and a pan-Scandinavia united defence forces. I want Swedes, Norwegians and Danes in the same damned battalions. I cannot see anything getting agreed in the EU, however much I would prefer that (Europe together strong and all that), with Hungary, Austria and all the other countries descending into neo-nationalism.

I would bet, that one of the first things Trump does is end support for Ukraine. We have to give them what they need now, so they can take back what's theirs before the US support runs out.

He says he wants to end the war. Ending support doesn't do that and I don't see how Russia winning would be beneficial to the US.

Have you ever browsed hexbear? Not giving ukrainian nazis any money will end the war. Ending the war to them means that Ukraine has to fall

[–] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 7 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I bet leaving Ukraine without weapons or ammunition would end that war rather quickly

[–] ContrarianTrail@lemm.ee 3 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

This implies that U.S. stopping weapons deliveries would leave them without weapons and ammunation which is not the case. It would make things a lot harder for Ukraine and make them lose more soldiers and land but it wouldn't stop the war. They'd rather die than submit to Russia. Also, U.S. is not their only weapons supplier.

Of course not, but still the largest. And I'm not sure if germany can increase its support enough to balance that. Especially with our own government falling apart currently

Since when does Trump care what is beneficial for the US?

[–] ContrarianTrail@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

What’s beneficial to himself and the U.S. seems like the only thing he cares about.

“Make America Great Again” is his motto, and the actions he took during his first term mostly aligned with it, even if the outcomes didn’t always turn out as intended. If you don’t believe he means what he says, then I don’t think he should be criticized for the rest of what he says either - since he wouldn’t mean that, either.

You actually fell hook, line and sinker into his lies, haven't you? And what is with your broken logic? Do you think people can only lie 100% of the time or never lie at all? That seems to be the basis for your argument here.

[–] ContrarianTrail@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I've been accused of being both Trump and Kamala supporter today despite not even living in the U.S.

Nope, I'm just a dispassionate observer who doesn't think in binary. Trump is not all bad no more than Kamala is all good. Things are nuanced and complicated.

Also no, I don't think people either lie 100% of the time or not at all, but I also don't think you get to arbitrarily choose which is a lie and what is not based on which better fits your agenda.

[–] Megaman_EXE@beehaw.org 4 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I think you gotta watch more Trump interviews. He's an authoritarian. He's told people twice that they would never need to vote again once he's in office.

He said Hitler did some good things. He wants generals like Hitler had. Shit you could make a book of Trump quotes of all the awful things he's done and said.

[–] ContrarianTrail@lemm.ee 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I don't see what this has to do with what I've said. I haven't claimed otherwise. I don't even like the guy and I wouldn't have voted for him if I lived in the U.S.

[–] Megaman_EXE@beehaw.org 4 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

I was replying to the part where you said Trump isn't all bad.

I get that you were trying to get across that not everything is black and white, but I mean...dang it's hard to find a good trait about the guy.

[–] ContrarianTrail@lemm.ee 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

it’s hard to find a good trait about the guy

He's not a warmonger for one. He's pretty funny too.

EDIT: Also, though a bit synical, I must say that I find some enjoyment in how mad he makes the far left which I see as one of the main reasons we got Trump to begin with. He's the reaction to wokeism and identity politics.

[–] stephen01king@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Where did I accuse you of being a Trump supporter? I said you fell for his lies. Plenty of people worldwide has fallen for his lies, mostly due to the amount of misinformation spreading in social media. You're just one of them.

If people can lie and tell the truth, they can obviously be criticised for what they said, so your argument again don't make sense. We're also not choosing to believe what he said based on agenda, it's based on what people know of him and what he stands for.

You seem to be fine arbitrarily choosing to believe his slogan while ignoring his actions of attempting a coup in 2020 and calling for persecuting those that speak against him. Do you believe the latter is for the good of the US, then?

[–] ContrarianTrail@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I have said what I had to say on the topic and you seem to posses such a good mind-reading capabilities that I don't think I'm needed for this discussion. I have no interest in engaging with people who result in personal attacks and accusations. Have a good debate.
