CB;DR

Click bait: Dont read

[–] StrongHorseWeakNeigh@lemmy.world 41 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Cock and balls; don't read

[–] pdxfed@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

Depending on the thrust of the reader's aim, that may drive more interest in the source.

[–] quantenzitrone@lemmings.world 5 points 1 month ago

Cock and Ball DoRture

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I will make an exception to do one read and leave a comment summary to hopefully reduce future click temptation for others.

A true hero!

[–] marcuslee@pawb.social 2 points 1 month ago

Not all heroes wear capes

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 month ago

yuo get one or you get the other. ain't nobody want all these silly anagrams.

[–] CaptnNMorgan@reddthat.com 2 points 1 month ago

The real comment is always in the comments

[–] conciselyverbose@sh.itjust.works 87 points 1 month ago (7 children)

Mine is video; didn't watch.

Ain't nobody got time for turning 30 seconds of text into a 10 minute video.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 31 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The easiest way to get the last word in an internet argument with me is to link to a video.

[–] Sc00ter@lemm.ee 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm pretty active in some gaming communities and my clans regularly share 10 minute videos. I get so frustrated. Half the time I can say, "does this video just say x, y, and z?" Most of them can be summarized in 1 or 2 sentences

[–] conciselyverbose@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I can acknowledge that some videos have value. A game review showing gameplay? A football film breakdown? Showing me tips and tricks to throwing the perfect vase on a pottery wheel? Please, feel free to use video.

Someone rambling to a camera? No.

But so many people will happily watch the 15 minute video and will somehow not have the attention span to read three paragraphs that say the same thing. (And they'll watch 8 hours of YouTube videos babbling incoherently, but an 8 hour audiobook that actually makes sense? "Too hard.")

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 12 points 1 month ago

Half of US adults can't read at a 6th grade level. So.

[–] sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 month ago

I either watch <30 second videos, or 2h+ long videos. No in between.

Shout out to HBomb's Pathologic video, no text review can give me that experience.

[–] RogueBanana@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago

Or when you are in public spaces without earphones. I am just doom scrolling on company time as a break.

[–] KickMeElmo@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Apparently you can use generative AI to summarize videos. Try using duckduckgo's !ai bang to do so anonymously.

[–] conciselyverbose@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 month ago

Yeah I have no interest in that either.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

HAIYGUIYZZZ, today we’re…blah blah…but let’s take a moment to talk about our sponsor, SMASHADALIKEBUTTON…

[–] affiliate@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

you could abbreviate that as -V;DW

[–] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 42 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Lol, nice.

But I ALWAYS try to replace pay walled links with archive links, even for posts that aren't mine.

Be nice if Lemmy had a bot for this, with a list of known pay walled sites.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You can automatically fetch one when posting with the native web ui

[–] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well that's something.

I guess the apps need to add it then.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sync doesn't have it while posting however you can easily view an archive.org page of any link by longpressing.

[–] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

Oh that's pretty cool

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You are a considerate person

[–] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

I have a Macrodroid macro tied to a shortcut that sends the regular link to archive.org, so it's a little easier.

I haven't worked out how to have it do all the work, yet, unfortunately, so I still have to copy/paste manually.

password doctor

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Wait is the P not for “present”? Is my whole life a lie?

[–] affiliate@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

might be a good place you mention that you can use the NoScript extension to block paywalls. i’ve found it works on most websites with a paywall. it works by simply not loading the javascript code responsible for showing the paywall.

[–] T156@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Although a lot of paywall sites are smart enough to only load part of the text, or only load it with a "show more" button, which would also break if you disable JavaScript.

[–] affiliate@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

yeah it doesn’t work for all of them, but it does work for a surprising amount of them

[–] Tja@programming.dev 6 points 1 month ago

I use NoScript for 10+ years and it has never worked for me :(

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

Why didn't they put the semicolon in the expanded statement?

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

TD;BU

Troll Detected. Blocked User.

[–] pseudo@jlai.lu 4 points 1 month ago

I approve and will start to use it today.

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Archer@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Immediately got a malware ad. Not recommended

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago

Weird. Works on my end with no ads or anything. The site offers 5-6 ways to strip paywalls using existing websites like 12ft.io

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

ns;dw
no synopsis; didn’t watch

ns;dc
no synopsis; didn’t click

[–] moosetwin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

sounds more like 'password; didn't read', though admittedly that is fitting too, howabout 'pwl;dr'?

Nfnr Not free, not reading

[–] Harvey656@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I propose PW;CR, si ce it's pay walled I couldn't read it even if I wanted to. I'm too poor to pay!

[–] Mr_Blott@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Very good way to miss out on a lot of the least biased and/or most informative news articles

They're not difficult to bypass most of the time

How about NBP/DR

Non bypassable paywall, didn't read

[–] Tja@programming.dev 1 points 1 month ago

Very good way to miss out on a lot of the least biased and/or most informative news articles, when they no longer can afford to do journalism and resort to tabloid crap, selling out to advertisers or billionaires with an agenda, or just close shop.
