I get the Internet is the internet but I can't help but feel like this is pure bullshit just so a scumy company can avoid minor consequences for their actions

I would not be surprised at all if it's true. There's being mad at a company being shitty, but there's always people who take it too far.
Honestly considering nutters im surprised any particular company is not getting something from someone at practically any point in time.
There was one threat and it was from a Unity employee
Apparently the report is that there was exactly one death threat and it came from an internal employee.

Which seems like a super conveniently timed "threat" to try to get some sympathy after announcing some universally negatively news.
