Yup. The moment I hear a Wilhelm I'm pulled right out of the movie.
I remember learning about that - once you know, you can never unhear it again, and that's a good thing:-).
Disagree about that being a good thing but only because of personal preference.
Like the Diddy Laugh.
Well the sound effect itself isn't great, but it's great (imho) to hear the homage whenever it is used:-).
I typically don't want to hear a noise that reminds me I'm watching something.
So if I'm immersed in a story and a sound effect reminds me it's a story, that's a huge negative.
Lighthearted and sillier things it doesn't matter as much as I'm not invested in the same way.
I think you're onto something. Maybe I dislike it because it breaks immersion for me. I hear it and know what it is and am now thinking about the decisions that someone made during production rather than focusing on the story.
Funny thing, I happen to have been watching a lot of Rawhide lately, and I don't think Pete Nolan (Sheb Wooley) has ever screamed, (Wilhelmly or otherwise ) even when he was shot. Google AI seems to think so, though.
