Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

that said if any FOSS devs want to make an app for categorizing and tagging memes outside the camera roll so i can use it for its intended purpose i will volunteer a (consensual) kiss on the forehead

Growing up, we always had a rotating selection of newspaper cartoons on the fridge. I think it’s the same.

The only one I remember was a three cell cartoon, each frame identical, with a goldfish in a bowl just looking out. In the third frame he has a thought bubble: “I keep thinking it’s Tuesday.”

Wow! That’s it!

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 8 points 8 months ago (1 children)

So does collecting anything. A hobby's a hobby.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

not all collections are colorful little squares tho

[–] intensely_human@lemm.ee 3 points 8 months ago

My Cheez-Its collection is though

[–] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 7 points 8 months ago

More people are likely to WANT to see your memes than your stamp collection

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 6 points 8 months ago

Been wanting this too! Only save S-tier memes but sometimes wanna find them again

It's still pretty early in development, but TagStudio is FOSS and may be worth keeping an eye on

Well there's Hydrus for that, needs to run on Windows/Linux/macOS though, having Hydrus Web as secondary desktop & primary mobile app.

Running it standalone from your phone is probably a bother, since you'd need to run it in X11 from Termux, but it's doable

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

can it do OCR/text search? that’s one of my favorite things about iOS’s camera roll

[–] AceSLS@ani.social 2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

In theory, yes. You'd need to know some python scripting though and interact with Hydrus via it's API

i am literally not smart enough to do this but thank you for your help 😭🩷

Literally last week I spent my time syncthinging my reaction image folder on my phone and PC and renaming all the files to be searchable. So yeah, maybe.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 4 points 8 months ago

syncthing is goated ! but boo on the manually renaming part that’s so 2014 and i need need need a software that can be slayer than that

I loved ScreenshotGo from firefox. Unfortunately it was discontinued. I still have the old version and while i do use it, I would love to have the ability to add folders which are downloaded from voyager or jerboa too to index memes

It basically detects text and index it, making it searchable by text. The (archived) git repo is https://github.com/mozilla-tw/ScreenshotGo

Also last release was 2018, 6 years old

People save memes? Today I learned...

[–] ShadowCatEXE@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago

I save them in my camera roll so that I can share them with people. I then just never delete them and they get lost. It is nice every once in a while to spot that random meme from 5 years ago and have a small chuckle.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 4 points 8 months ago (1 children)

once you start it becomes a really fun habit lol

[–] westyvw@lemm.ee 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

Honestly I thought memes had kinda run their course, i didn't know there were new ones even, lol.

Hey if it's fun, that's great. Kinda was looking for an idea for an app. This might be an interesting one. What features would make a great one?

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 4 points 8 months ago

dude essentially a camera roll with tagging, folders, ocr/text search and duplicate recognition would go crazy.

bonus points if it can use some image recognition to do auto sorting by format or macro.

i have trauma from this type of app becoming obsolete or paywalled like 5 months into using it 😭

[–] kibiz0r@midwest.social 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

So any day now, we can expect a custom porn video where the stars make fun of a meme collector’s folders and then delete them.

[–] lars@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 8 months ago

a psychologist . . . told him stamp-collecting was a ridiculous hobby

I have a teensy suspicion that this is not exactly what the doctor said.
