Holy shit. How is this meme how I find this out?

I thought for sure it'd be a hung jury.

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 44 points 5 months ago (1 children)

There was a lawyer talking and she said that this was one of the strongest cases she'd ever seen. Basically, there were dozens of smoking guns.

[–] dalekcaan@lemm.ee 16 points 5 months ago

I'm sure it had to be. If they had left any doubt whatsoever Trump and his cronies would've exploited the hell out of it. Hell, they'll almost certainly try anyway.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 23 points 5 months ago

Lol glad to be of service

[–] Veraxus@lemmy.world 13 points 5 months ago

Don’t worry, I’m sure he’ll get off with nothing more than a gentle tap on the wrist… just like all those times he got off scott-free for contempt when anyone else on the planet would have been jailed.

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

Same image could’ve been used for that, too.

FloridaMan who disappointed a porn star found guilty on 34 counts.

Slaps roof of ~~car~~belly. This bad boy can fit so many verdicts.

Wait so after foreign election interference, multiple sexual assaults, bragging about those same assaults, an attempted coup of the government, and losing classified documents, the thing that finally gets Trump charged with a criminal offence is dating a stripper

Fucking America, man!

[–] mipadaitu@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Found guilty of falsifying business records as part of a wider effort of election fraud.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 months ago

Yeah "dating a stripper" wasn't quite it. First off, he didn't "date" anyone. He literally met a pornstar, invited her to his hotel, and raw-dogged her. But that's not even a crime. You can raw-dog pornstars to your heart's content if you want to. That was just the motive for his crimes.

But not the motive that a normal person would have. A normal person would try to prevent their wife from finding out. Trump literally did not give a shit if his trophy wife knew he was out banging randos while she was still nursing her newborn. He only cared that it would hurt his election chances. So he paid nearly half a million dollars to cover up the story, committing 34 felonies in the process.

I love that all of the above isn't an "alleged" event. All of it has been proven in court as fact. Well, except for the Melania nursing her baby part. That is an embellishment on my part. I'm pretty sure trophy wives don't nurse their kids - they have nannies for that.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Never in the history of history has a single man been put through as many trials as Trump.

Jesus came twice.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 19 points 5 months ago

Jesus came twice.

Me too, buddy. Me too.

[–] LostinDub@lemmy.world 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Thank you, that was the most beautiful way of finding out that news

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 months ago

Haha no problem. One day you can tell future generations where you were on this glorious day.

[–] Shard@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Its a messed up system that you can be a convicted felon but still run for president.

[–] ToastedPlanet@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Weirdly this might be one of the few times our criminal justice system is structured correctly. The DOJ bagging presidential candidates to prevent them running against the incumbent would be a huge problem. Of course, that would be the least of our worries if Trump became president again.

[–] abracaDavid@lemmy.today 2 points 5 months ago

Seems highly exploitable.

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

If you couldn't then all a ruling party/elite would need to do it find a way to criminalize their opponents.

[–] PhlubbaDubba@lemm.ee 11 points 5 months ago (4 children)

Seriously, what the hell do you even sentence a man to for this?

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 17 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Honestly, I would be shocked if he does any jail time

[–] InternetUser2012@midwest.social 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'd be fine with 30 days per FELONY. That's nothing compared to what you or I would get, but I doubt he'd be alive after serving that time. The only reason he's running for president is to keep his fat incontinent orange ass out of jail and to steal more top secret shit to pay off the half a billion he owes in foreign loans.

[–] ToastedPlanet@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

I have heard judges can have a defendant serve their sentences concurrently. So if Trump did serve prison time for this it would probably only be four years for thirty-four concurrent sentences of business fraud. It's likely Trump will serve prison time for these convictions.

For Trump to appeal this he still needs grounds to appeal. He can't just say he doesn't like the jury's ruling. He needs to argue an actual case to the appeals court that the trial was unfair in some way. For example, that his right to a fair trial was violated because something the prosecution or judge did. I don't see any higher court siding with Trump that his right to a fair trial was violated. I could have missed it, but considering how much coverage the trial got, there didn't seem to be anything obviously wrong with the trial. I honestly doubt the judge would delay the start of Trump's hypothetical prison sentence for the appeals process for that same reason.

He can't claim presidential immunity for this, because it was something he did before becoming president and thus falsifying business records cannot fall under the scope of Official Acts. I think the Supreme Court wouldn't be interested in taking the case as there isn't going to be a constitutional question for them to rule on.

Even if Trump became president, he wouldn't be able pardon these convictions because they are from the state of New York. The president can only pardon federal offenses.

I don't see Trump getting out on parole. He's going to be posting the whole time about how he did nothing wrong.

The judge could choose to fine him instead of giving him prison time or put him under house arrest. Given Trump's conduct during the trial I don't see why the judge would feel the need to give him a more lenient sentence than a four year prison sentence in prison and a $170000 dollar fine.

With an internet connection he could serve his presidential term from a New York prison, pardon himself for federal offenses or simply direct the AG to stop the federal investigations, and have his cronies steal all the secrets he could want for him. He could sign legislation and executive orders while in prison as long as someone delivered the documents to him. The only reason to get out of this is that it might hurt his election chances. At this point the convictions probably only make the race closer. He could probably even do the debates remotely, but he could just as easily use the prison sentence as excuse to not show up.

I feel like people are trying to not get their hopes up. It's likely he will serve prison time for this. It just probably won't be the deciding factor in this election or inhibit his ability to hypothetically serve as president. edit: typo

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I appreciate your optimism and hope you are proven to be correct.

[–] ToastedPlanet@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 months ago

I hope he sees prison time for this. I haven't been able to think of a way for him to get out of this that doesn't involve a mask off fascist, subverting the rule of law, moment involving numerous people in positions of power, including Trump. Such as, having the military extradite him from prison if he hypothetically took office, or the SC choosing to rule on a case with no constitutional question, or the judge just fine him after his conduct in the trial. Also, that last one doesn't seem plausible to me because the judge knows who Trump is and the judge is unlikely to believe 34 counts are a small lapse in judgement. If someone does figure out a way he could get out of this legally, given what happened with the trial and the convictions, I would probably inclined to believe them if they could show their math, so to speak. I think Trump will of course take any legal means necessary to get out of this, but the fascists aren't going to want to make it even more obvious that the MAGA movement is a fascist movement. Especially not when it only amounts to an inconvenience for Trump if he is hypothetically elected.

Personally I find thinking about these kind of edge cases to be fun. It's unfortunate that this edge case has to do with a possible fascist takeover of our democracy.

https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/no-such-thing-as-white-house-arrest-legal-experts-say-even-a-conviction-in-hush-money-case-will-not-put-trump-behind-bars/

I found this article that explains why he would be fined but not given prison time. I think the legal experts didn't account for the fact that these 34 counts were upgraded to felonies because of their ties to an election conspiracy. These are not typical financial crimes or even typical upgraded financial crimes, so I don't know why the judge would treat them that way. Cohen was sentenced to three years, I think in part, because his offenses had to do with the 2016 presidential election, and these hush money payments, as well. I would be interested to see a case in New York state where someone was convicted of financial crimes that were connected to a conspiracy to influence an election and they did not receive prison time. If such a case has happened before this one.

Also, there need not be a White House arrest because Trump is not president currently. There is no rule that I'm aware of that a person gets to wait for their appeal because they are running for president. Especially since Trump can run his campaign entirely behind bars with internet access.

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 15 points 5 months ago (2 children)

They could give him four years on each count.

[–] ReiRose@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Up to 20 years according to cnn.

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 15 points 5 months ago

A harsh sentence could be justified because the fraud was done to help steal an election.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago

Melania would love that

[–] PumpkinSkink@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Which would be served simultaneously so somewhere before zero and four years.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Seriously! But I wouldn't be surprised if he won an award from the RNC over this.

[–] Klicnik@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 months ago

Presented by Kyle Rittenhouse.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Some fines.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 10 points 5 months ago

This is how I found out. Thank you.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 7 points 5 months ago

Call me when he's actually in prison. Until then he still gets to be a rich asshole with a fuckload of idiot supporters to grift. I doubt anything serious even comes from this.

[–] Remotedeck@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 5 months ago (3 children)

But is he actually in jail yet? I'm waiting for that before I celebrate

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 9 points 5 months ago

Sentencing is July 11th. I expect appeals upon appeals though, so not getting my hopes up for actual jail time.

[–] InternetUser2012@midwest.social 7 points 5 months ago

I'll celebrate the fact this piece of shit didn't get away with it. He has 34 felonies. He is a convicted felon.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Will probably just be fines. I'll be (pleasantly) shocked if he gets anything more.

[–] buttPickle@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

So satisfying

Unfortunately I think to make this complete the bottom croc/alligator should also be named Trump with a little "well anyway..." bubble.

Quite literally nothing is going to happen to him. He's member of Elite Legal Prime™ the tier of Justice™ that don't suffer the same consequences or get the same sentences as us Pathetic Discount Pleb™ members in the rest of society get because he's a Special Boy since he has money and a cult...
