All Cops Are Bastards
Apparently, prejudice is fine when it's against all members of a specific job!
I mean, duh? You choose to become a cop, it's not forced on you in any way.
Much in the same way all child rapists are bastards, or the way all Nazis are bastards.
Are you being sarcastic ?
Welcome to Lemmy ๐ฅฒ
What if someone breaks in your house, or drives drunk? What should happen?
What is the solution? No cops at all? Police reform? What?
You're free to Google police reform and read the incredibly large amount of material on that subject, as there are a lot of competing ideas in that regard
Yes, but Iโm asking what you think. There are a variety of opinions on it.
When someone broke into my friends house the cops waited a few hours to show up so the guy would be gone, took a statement and never did anything with it ๐คทโโ๏ธ I think people just get pissed off that they don't do the thing they claim to do in most instances.
I wonder if that is in any way related to defunding the police so they have not enough resources
I am sure there are jurisdictions where the cops have calls for service waiting and are just chilling with coffee until the calls calm down, and then go there and more or less do nothing, yes. That's not been my experience -- when I witnessed domestic violence they rolled up pretty much instantly and grabbed the guy, a couple times when my friend had a mental health crisis they came and took her to the hospital. I can understand how having had different experiences could color someone's impression of the police differently.
That wasn't really my question though. What should happen? Reform of the police, higher standards and getting rid of the bums? Defunding the police and hoping that will make things better? No cops whatsoever? You're describing a problem (in regards to what happened with your friend); what is the solution to it?
It doesn't, because that didn't happen
Ask me whether or not it happened in the one jurisdiction Iโm aware of (and where the cops are generally perfectly professional in all interactions Iโve had with them)
The point is that if that weren't true, the good ones should be dealing with the bad ones. And sometimes they do.
But that isn't the case in some places.
The phrase is intended to call attention to the fact that in some places things have gotten so bad the police is no longer capable of policing itself. It's not that they're all the worst, it's that they're all just bad enough to not lift a finger against "their own" when they should.
When a system can no longer hold itself to its own standards, the whole thing is no longer fit for purpose.
Some people mean it literally, in that viewpoint the system of policing itself is a problem and is not necessary in a fair and just society.
You will no doubt ask some trivial questions about this, but I'm just going to say up front that I'm not here to debate it.
You can read about police abolition and anarchism for some perspectives.
I do agree that it's a stupid phrase, but the point of it is to say that bad apples ruin the bunch. Police in the US, especially the bad apples, rarely are held accountable.
So it isn't a Blue Life, then ? It is just a job ?
Huh. Good to know.
