Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

tbf peak engineering usually survives without too much needed design changes. For instance, pencils and paper have looked the same for quite a while now. And the Dyson hand dryer's engineering is even peakier than those. It's so refined that I think it's reasonable that it'd keep the same form through the year 2255.

edit: I didn't think I needed this because I was comparing the invention of the Dyson hand dryer to the invention of the pencil... but uhhhhh... /s

I thought most hand dryers were bacteria traps? Unless they've made some changes since.

[–] Cosmos7349@lemmy.world 21 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I didn't say what it was engineered for

[–] Norgur@fedia.io 10 points 5 months ago

There is just a little transporter there, storing all pathogens in the pattern buffer. Patent goes to a Mister Oberin or something.

Oh, they are. It'd be cleaner to lick the general toilet seat than to lick your finger after using one of these. I don't use them at all.

[–] ricdeh@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Your hands are supposed to be clean from washing with soap and water. The dryer is just there to make your hands dry because moving around with wet hands isn't very comfortable.

[–] ThePantser@lemmy.world 10 points 5 months ago (2 children)

But they rapidly suck air in from the surrounding area which means if someone flushes the poo partials are in the air and being blown on your hands.

Gonna let you know that paper towel dispensers aren't air tight, so they are every bit as contaminated as everything else in the bathroom

[–] nightwatch_admin@feddit.nl 3 points 5 months ago

Paper towels aren’t very good at sucking. If they were, they’d run out faster on the gent’s than Musk buys a social media company.

And then you have to touch the doorknob/push plate/etc. to leave.

New hygiene unlocked. Gonna stop wasting money on soap.

[–] P1nkman@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

Yes, that's the idea. And it works. But you're hands are no longer clean. Quick search: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=hands+dryer+bacteria+&t=fpas&ia=web har an impact on me, and i don't use them at all.

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 5 months ago (2 children)

It's possible that the Dyson driers do a miny Baryon sweep of your hands....except it doesn't ablate your hands off.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Hu-vok tried to laser-torch Picard. He will not be missed.

Disclaimer: "Minor ablation may occur."

This needs to be a Lower Decks episode.

Mariner: Why don't you use the Dyson dryer?

Boimler: Because they don't really get your hands dry. I end up using a paper towel anyway. Besides, I don't want to accidentally slice my hands off.

Mariner: Quit being a baby. I just finished tuning it. Give it a try.

Boimler: sigh fine. The Dyson dryer cuts his hands clean off.

Beat

They both start screaming

[–] almar_quigley@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago

These dryers are no where near peak design. They are disgusting bacteria traps. If your conducting scientific experiments then maybe.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 6 points 5 months ago

Same reason Star Trek should refrain from mentioning still-living people.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

They've already changed the design of these dryers so that the water from your hands is sprayed on the floor instead of collecting at the bottom of the dryer.

[–] baggins@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 months ago

They already replaced that design tho. You haven't seen the new ones?
