"Best Sheffield Steel"

  • Brush: Dogclaration LG 2022 Mystery Brush (B16)
  • Razor: Rolls Razor Imperial N° 2 with accessories
  • Blade: Rolls Blade E 45
  • Lather: Mäurer & Wirtz Tabac Original
  • Aftershave: Mäurer & Wirtz Tabac Original
  • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz Tabac Original

There's been some Rolls Razor discussion on the Discord recently, probably in pursuit of the #ForeverSafety scavenger hashtag and the new-to-me challenge, and it gave me the itch to take my favourite Rolls out for a spin. This one is in pristine condition, seemingly NOS (back ~40 shaves ago, when I got it, that is), and I enjoy its smooth, mild shave.

I wish there was a modern stainless steel reimplementation of the Rolls concept, because I constantly worry about rust with these little gems. Unlike carbon straight razors, it's a bad idea to oil the Rolls to protect it from rust because oil on the friction clip in the stropping/honing mechanism would render it useless.

For the new Rolls owners preparing for LG, you might want to have a look at the maintenance instructions that came with the original Rolls Model N°2.

Thank you very much for letting me try the Rolls last year. After using it, I can't say that I think a modern implementation would be successful in a world where a bit of cheap plastic and 5 slivers of poorly ground stainless are considered the pinnacle of razor design :)

My pleasure!

And you're right, I'm sure. It's one thing for artisans name fancy three piece razors, but an entirely different beast to manufacture anything with as many parts as a Rolls. And industry, well, why would they?
