The amount of pinned daily threads is starting to get a bit silly. They're not even from this year!

Managed to write a whole bunch of emails and applications (10+), so yay me, although I'm completely knackered.

Also feel like I might be mildly cursed. Every time I contact an RACV drive instructor, I get asked for details, and promptly ghosted afterwards. 2 more, and I'll be out of the ones that serve the local area.

Joke's on me for buying the vouchers first, and then trying to schedule an instructor, rather than going the other way around.

I think it's a federation bug, when I still was on my lemm.ee account, the unpinning isn't getting synced.

[–] neurospice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I get this as well. It's the pinned posts on the melbourne comm.

What it looks like on db0:

What it's (probably) meant to be like:

Don't know how or when this happened.

[–] Baku@aussie.zone 3 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Can confirm that the latter is what it looks like on aussie.zone. Guessing it's some issue with federation.

@Nath@aussie.zone, @lodion@aussie.zone, @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com any ideas what's going on?

What a fascinating issue! No, I have no idea what's going on, here. It's clearly some sort of federation bug. The pin request is federating, but the unpin is not.

I've checked six other lemmy instances, they all have extra Melbourne Daily threads pinned. They each agree that

  1. Mar 22 2024 (Today)
  2. Dec 26 2023
  3. 26 Nov 2023

Should all be pinned. I don't know what November and December 26 have in common, I wonder whether they're Lemmy version upgrade dates? There was one at Christmas time, I'll have to double-check the exact date.

Beyond those dates, five of the six instances had random dates pinned (though two of them had 01 Jul 2023) still.

This isn't affecting aussie.zone users.

Upgrade dates might make sense, or it's a left over when aussie.zone was having a few synchronisation problems with servers that weren't on 0.18 at the time. They might have just not unpinned properly.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Is this a thread where posts are only allowed by mods?

[–] Baku@aussie.zone 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (2 children)

Sorry, just realised I mentioned you with no context about what this is. Anybody's allowed to post the daily threads, and anybody can comment in them. They get pinned until days end when a new one is posted and the old one is unpinned

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Then I don't know. There's a bug when the community is mod-post-only, but since it's open for all, it must be something else. You're not lagging however https://phiresky.github.io/lemmy-federation-state/site?domain=aussie.zone

[–] Baku@aussie.zone 1 points 7 months ago

Righto, thanks for checking. I'm not an admin, so I'll probably just leave it to lodion/Nath to check out. Thanks 0!

[–] T156@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Yep, I basically get the first one on lemmy.world.

A Voyager screenshot showing multiple threads pinned, all of which are from this year. Almost as many pins as a cushion.

In my experience with the Lemmy.world instance, sometimes pinned posts will not β€œun-pin” the next day. You need moderator status to unpin them I think.

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 3 points 7 months ago

That's unusual because with in 10 minutes of me posting the thread at midnight some kind soul pins it and unpins the old one.

[–] Nath@aussie.zone 2 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Ok, I won't say I've fixed this bug, but I have managed a dodgy hack around it that fixes it sorta. In the immediate term, it has been fixed it for lemmy.world and lemmy.dbzer0.com users. I'll look at other instances soon.

The answer is to re-pin the post, wait a while (10 minutes is enough, but I might try reducing it and experimenting) for that to propagate/federate across Lemmy, and then Unpin the post. Doing it this way unpins the post properly.

It appears the original unpinning for some dates didn't get exported to other instances. I'm still not sure what was special about November and December 26, I got a bit distracted with the solution and not bothering much with the cause.
