I've contemplated potentially making a mastodon or firefish instance as well eventually but I dunno

What do hosting costs usually look like? I've got no idea what the pricing of it would be.

Also, I think beehaw did a breakdown of their donations and costs, so assuming this instance gets big it could be something to look into.

Yeah, I don't anticipate it to balloon. The biggest issue with lemmy is mainly images right now, so object storage will unfortunately rapidly expand. That's likely to be the biggest cost.

I know lots of instances are encouraging users to use imgur links, are you able to disable image uploads?

I can, but images unfortunately get autocached to the image database regardless.
