Chinese company BYD has moved a step closer to toppling Elon Musk's Tesla as the world's biggest-selling manufacturer of electric vehicles.

The firm said on Monday it had sold a record 526,000 battery-only vehicles in the last three months of 2023.

For the year as a whole, Shenzen-based BYD said it had sold more than 3 million so-called-new energy vehicles (NEVs), which includes battery-only vehicles and hybrids.

Almost 1.6 million of its total sales were battery-only vehicles, the firm said.

Industry analysts have forecast that Tesla sold around 483,000 electric vehicles in the last three months of 2023 and 1.82 million for the year as a whole.

You still can't buy byd cars outside China can you? Or do they export to some places?

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 13 points 10 months ago

They've been available in several European countries since the end of 2022 or so.

You can buy BYD cars outside of China. For example:

The company says it plans to launch three new models in Europe within the coming year in addition to the five models it is already selling that include sedans, hatchbacks and SUVs. BYD has 230 outlets in 19 European countries, it says.

No BYD cars in the US (yet), except trucks and buses:

BYD has been making electric buses in the United States for years and supplies cities such as Los Angeles and Long Beach from a factory in Lancaster, California, built a decade ago.

They were advertising in the Mexico City Airport yesterday when I was there.

They have display models in malls in Mexico. The cars honestly feel really well put together for their price.

They’re everywhere in New Zealand.

Quite a few here in Australia.

They manufacture and sell the buses in Canada... There are BYD buses in operation in at least Toronto, Victoria, Longeuil, St. Albert and Grand Prairie (and probably more by now). https://en.byd.com/news/byd-opens-first-canadian-bus-assembly-plant/ If you're in Montreal, there's a decent chance you'll see BYD E6 taxis.

There's been rumors of the cars being prepped for general sale in Canada.... but I can't find any proof of that right now.

They're pretty good buses too lol

They're advertising on TV in the UK, so guessing they're at least at preorder stage.

[–] regbin_@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I can buy one here in Malaysia.
