If you want to wield a a massive amount of global political and military power, it's pretty important.

Externally it is a powerful position, but can the president do much inside the US itself?

Pardoning and appointments seem to be the limits.

OK. Emergency powers are pretty strong but the rest are largely external to the US.

For one, the president has the power to veto any legislation passed by Congress.
