No you can have them done in regular clothes. You'll typically only wear a hospital gown if you're staying in the hospital beforehand.
I've had 2 MRIs and I wasn't staying in the hospital either time but I had to put on a gown both times.
It depends on the hospital. I've had MRIs done in my regular clothes (Tshirt and athletic shorts) and some at another hospital where I had to change into scrubs. Both places provided a locker for personal stuff like phone, wallet, keys, etc.
Probably depends on how far in you have to go. I had one just for my head to check out an issue with my ear, and I kept my regular clothes on.
