Good argument, but still someone like Benzema wasn't on Ballon d'Or level for the majority of his career, but during 2018-2021 and especially in 2021/22 he absolutely bossed it, I think he deserved to "sit in the throne", at least for one year.

Haaland might as well be there, but I could argue that Mbappe hasn't been the best French player in the WC, nor the best French player in most seasons (Benzema, Kante and Griezmann have all been better than him during 2017-2022) and in many cases not even the best PSG player (UCL 2020).

It's all semantics ofc but if we're talking about specifically Messi & Ronaldo throne and not just best in the world at this moment throne, for me the biggest argument is longevity. Ronaldinho had a peak that rivaled both of them imo, but I do not put him in the same category because compared to them he didn't have the longevity.
