Because launching them into the sky and letting the ground do the killing impact looks better for the numbers?
with a tall flat front the entire kinetic energy gets transfered directly into the child. with a sloped lower hood this doesn't happen. you might end up tumbling over the hood but that's actually desired. the kinetic impact is way lower, resulting in higher survival chances.
