Well now the President and his government are openly saying that they will kidnap anyone they don't like off the street, or out of their homes or schools, and disappear them to a foreign prison where they may be tortured, enslaved, and/or killed, without any justification, evidence, accusation or due process. Any American, or anyone else in the USA, can be going about their daily business and the cops can kidnap you and traffick you that same day into a lifetime of torture in a foreign dictatorship famous for human rights abuses, and no one in the world can help you.
All these years we've had to put up with Americans going on about needing guns to protect themselves from tyranny and the importance of free speech, and when an actual tyrannical dictator starts disappearing people for their political views, their race or (it's coming) their gender identity or sexual orientation, Americans do nothing to stop it. In fact, many of the "guns and free speech" crowd just love it. Until the police come for them.
More than 1.4% of the US population (5 million people) protested on the same day nationwide a few days ago. It's not nothing. It gives me some hope. I'm a non-passing trans woman and am well aware of the coming danger.
It is an encouraging start and I don't mean to diminish the value of it. I hope you get through this time safely and without things getting too unpleasant for you.
