Every time I go to the piefed frontpage I'm blown away by how much more polished it is. It has all the bells and whistles that lemmy is sometimes missing.

Whats the catch? Why aren't we recommending everyone goes to piefed instead of lemmy?

App support is one thing I can think of.

As I said, it has a lot more polish. Its easier to discover communities, and it has feeds.

Two questions for you, I'm genuinely curious, I hope they don't come up as agressive

  • why are you still using your Lemm.ee account instead of Piefed
  • why create this post here instead of !fediverse@piefed.social ?

why create this post here instead of !fediverse@piefed.social ?

This community is much bigger? He's asking a question so probably wants input from the most people possible.

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It is, but there's only one way to make Piefed grow, it's to start getting Piefed communities more active.

Lemmy covers pretty much all the topics the current Threadiverse is interested in, so at some point posters have to accept to post to smaller communities.

I'm not saying everyone has to do it, but as OP states that Piefed is more polished, I was surprised

Does it really matter when you can access the same content from Piefed? It's one of fedi's great strengths that different experiences can be tailored on the same platform.

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yep! We should probably move some comms to piefed, so that .world doesn't control too much, but not to piefed specifically.

[–] flamingos@feddit.uk 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There's also three Fediverse comms (here, ml and zip) like do we really need another one?

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

here

Single mod who didn't want to create a meta posts to ask for more mods.

I studied the situation before starting to post to !fediverse@piefed.social

[–] flamingos@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Has world really not enabled parallel sending yet? That feature was made specifically for them.

Single mod who didn’t want to create a meta posts to ask for more mods.

But the sidebar does say to DM them if you're interested in modding. Not wanting a meta post is weird though.

I just checked the graph, its now 4.26 days.

Not wanting a meta post is weird though.

Every time I had a mod refusing meta posts it lead to power tripping. Better safe than sorry

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Even so, .world will eventually enable parallel sending, and even in the meantime aussie.zone only boasts 375 MAUs. I empathize with their plight but it's what, 0.6% of the Lemmy userbase? I don't know that such a miniscule minority is worth bending over backwards for and creating further fragmentation.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for choosing instances other than .world when setting up new comms. They're too big. But while we're still at a point where content amount is the primary concern and we're trying to achieve critical mass I also don't know if endless fragmentation is well advised.

.world will eventually enable parallel sending

But when? I don't want to openly ask LW admins because the 0.19.9 migration took them a while, but it doesn't seem like it's going to happen any time soon. I've seen someone mentioning that they might be delaying it due to resources issues, but their resource usage is not going to go down any time soon.

aussie.zone

It is not only aussie.zone. Reddthat is also hosted in Australia, and then had to add a proxy in Europe to prevent a similar delay: https://reddthat.com/post/37387576/17377718. Lemmy.nz is in a similar case.

Lemmy.blahaj.zone is also Australian IIRC, but not sure where the server is hosted. Reddthat is only 429 MAU, but Blahaj is 1171

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 1 points 1 day ago

LW are hesitant to do major changes because if something goes wrong it disrupts the entire Lemmy ecosystem. It's a direct negative consequence of them growing too big, but once they're in this position I can understand their reservations. I too wish they'd implement upgrades faster but I have no reason to believe they will just refuse to implement an upgrade forever, that's unreasonable to assume.

Lemmy.nz is what, about 100 MAU? And I know a Blåhaj admin is Australian but Fedi Observer has the server listed as based in Finland and hosted in Germany. Don't know if that's wrong though. Are their users also reporting delays?

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

not to piefed specifically.

Why not? I'm not saying to move everything, but a few communities to Piefed could be nice. A few to Mbin too to keep everyone happy.

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

Alright, then I misread your comment

[–] Snoopy@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It doesn't matter, true. We can see every comments in a crossposted post. But on the other hand Blaze is also right. :)

I told him the same thing about its lemmy repport that i wished something less lemmy centric. :)

With our current situation, it's just that most of the things are going to happen on Lemmy. New app update? it's a Lemmy app. New monthly active user milestone reached? Lemmy is probably the main reason.

Hopefully things will get more balanced over time, but we can't expect a perfect 1/3 split of posts between the three platforms.

[–] Snoopy@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yep but considering your activities, you can tell them more about PieFed and Mbin. It will help reach a more balanced software's use. :)

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Didn't I with the Mbin post yesterday?

[–] Snoopy@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

Yes sorry, it's perfect. :)

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

This comm is much bigger, and I happened to be on my .ee account at the time.

e: And I've used this account for longer, so I don't want to abandon it.

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago

And I’ve used this account for longer, so I don’t want to abandon it.

Probably the main reason why people won't move to Piefed either
