You're Canadian, so I'd like your perspective on this.

Less than 1% of fentanyl that enters America actually crosses the US-Canadian border. Canada has basically been strong-armed into prioritizing US border security concerns for a non-existent threat.

Trudeau knows the effect of a trade war on Canadian industries (about 75 of Canadian exports are to the US). He is also aware that tariffs on America will do little to shift Trump's position, so he opted for damage control as the significant hit towards the Canadian economy would not bode well for his party (which is already likely to lose to the conservatives) in the upcoming election.

This is further evidenced by Canada's efforts to reduce dependence on US markets. Trudeau had no leverage in this trade war.

Now obviously i don't support Trump's tariffs one bit, but i think saying things like "Trump actually caved to us because we offered the deal we already planned to offer" is cope and misses the bigger picture of how if Trump hadn't enforced these tariffs, Trudeau wouldn't be wasting tax money and troops to fend a non-existent border threat. It's a sad thing really.

Well you seem to be off on a couple things. Like, Trump didn’t enforce the tariffs. As in, they were supposed to go in effect this past Tuesday, but they haven’t.

Trump wants Canada to appoint a “fentanyl czar.” What does that even mean?

Now, when you enter a country, whose border guards do you deal with? The one you’re entering. If Trump’s claims of drugs entering Canada are true - anyone with a brain knows it’s overblown - maybe they need to do something about their side of the border.

Canada was already upgrading border security because of Trump’s threats.

Nothing’s actually going to change because of this “deal”. Things are changing because Trump’s an asshole.

Trudeau will pick someone and say, “here Donald, this guy’s the Fentanyl Czar.” while rolling his eyes.
