So I just got my Steam Deck and I work in a Cruise ship. I am planning to bring it with me when I go back for work. I need some advice/guide on how can I maximize this beautiful machine with zero internet for 6 months.

Please suggest games that I can consume offline. (I heard that some of the games still needs to be online despite of being single player or "offline")

Thank you guys!

I've tested undervolting and overclocking the Steam Deck a lot and i've gotten some really strange results.

When running stock unlocked clocks i can get a lot lower voltage on the core if i don't touch the soc voltage. If i lower the soc i can get about -50 mv core -30 mv soc stable. I got to about -70 mv core when not touching the soc voltage and didn't dare to go beyond that. The thing is if i undervolt beyond about -35 mv the cpu downclocks itself, always. Lock the clocks to 3,5 ghz in powertools or bios doesn't matter it will always underclock itself in steamos. In windows on the other hand keeps the clocks locked but it will run unstable. The only explanation i can think of is that undervolting is not considered undervolting in steamos. Its just lowering the total allowed voltage in the voltage curve therefore the lower clocks. Does anyone have another explanation why this could be happening?

The gpu on the other hand does not downclock itself when locked. Also the higher the clock the better undervolt i can get. When locking the gpu to 1,6 ghz in the bios i can get -65 mv stable while running it unlocked i can only get -45 mv.

The stock voltage curve is not meant for overclocking clearly. Clocks beyond stock use a stupid amount of power. If i lock the clocks above stock then run windows it will completely ignore the set TDP, i've seen it spike to like 40 watts when it was set to 20. Like i said before steamos will always underclock the cpu if it exceeds the maximum TDP, but it will never touch the gpu clocks. The higher i force the gpu the lower undervolt i can get. If i lock the gpu to 1,9 ghz i can get around -100 mv stable instead of the -65 mv at 1,6 ghz. Its the same with the cpu but like i wrote before i have to use windows to lock the clocks. I haven't done enough testing in windows because its gonna fry my soc, it just ignores the TDP.

If we could somehow create our own voltage curve instead of just a total undervolt we could probably fix the insane power usage we see from going above stock clocks. Setting the gpu to about 1,8-1,9 ghz with -100 mv gets a reasonable wattage for the set clock. The cpu on the other hand is just not worth the overclock at the moment. Is it just my deck where the cpu is underclocking itself beyond -35 mv? What results from underclocking are you guys getting on your deck? I believe i got lucky on the gpu silicone lottery. Sadly i am back to running unlocked stock clocks with a undervolt of -35mv core -35 soc -45 mv gpu. The cpu could clearly get lower total powerdraw if i could undervolt the core more and not the soc as much without it downclocking.

Just tried Decky and been loving it. CSS Loader + VibrantDeck make the Deck look like a completely different device. But I'm a bit worried that it might decrease battery life or performance. Is it possible if I’m only changing colors with a static theme on CSS Loader?

After lots of reading and cloning my original 256gb internal to a new micron 2tb several times over and having issues where it was stuck on the steam logo and unable to boot into SteamOS, I believe i've figured out what the issue is.

As some others have pointed out its an issue with the GPT (GUID Partition Table) not being placed in the correct location (at the end) of the data in the new drive, where it is expected. Rather, its somewhere in the middle which prevents the deck from successfully understanding how to boot the operating system.

I believe i've figured out how to fix this with some simple commands in Konsole immediately after cloning the original drive.

Goes something like this:

  1. Boot into desktop mode with the new SSD in an enclosure and connected via usb.
  2. Open konsole and perform the actual cloning. In my case (and most peoples), that command is: sudo dd if=/dev/nvme0n1 of=/dev/sda conv=sync status=progress
  3. Upon completing, run sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda
  4. If all is well, all text will be white and it will spit out no errors. HOWEVER IF IT HAS RED ERROR TEXT saying that there is a mismatch in the location/placement/size of the GPT, this is what we need to fix!
  5. Now run sudo fdisk /dev/sda
  6. And now we need to write the new GPT fix. Run (without quotations) the single letter 'w'
  7. If it asks for confirmation type 'y' or 'yes'
  8. You can now exit konsole and proceed to move that new cloned SSD from the enclosure into the steam deck itself.

I think this should solve those pesky boot issues. I hope so, at least. It's worked for me and I wanted to share with any other poor souls trying to figure this out.

Cheers! Lemme know if it worked for you.

Just out of curiosity. Ordered a 64GB refurbished model from steam and debating of upgrading the SSD or just use my Samsung SD card.

Anyone here who plays exclusively only from SD card? Maybe also docked? Because I plan to use it sometimes at my TV or would that be an issue?

Title pretty much, bought and played the game about a year ago and made it all the way to Hades a couple times, but progress was getting so slow and i lost interest. I picked the game back up last week to do runs on my lunch break and just finished my first successful run (91 if anyone cares). Pretty sure I would have never touched the game again if I didn't have this new toy.

I for the life of me can't find a way to get it to run because it just refuses to launch and sends me back to the games steam page.

Hey deckers,

Like most of you I’ve been super into bg3, best rpg I’ve played in ages blah blah blah. But also like you guys I struggled to find settings that felt like the game was performing to its peak on the SD.

After tons of experimentation and thread searching this is what worked for me.

Stock steam deck: Cryoutilities on recommended settings (a must) Change RAM usage to 4g in the boot menu. 60hz refresh rate 30 fps lock

Bg3: Medium preset Trilinear Fsr 1.0 ultra quality

Been getting very consistent 30fps with much less hitching and solid visuals. The game just feels good with these. If you guys have any questions feel free to ask, but this has made the game really playable if not downright excellent on the deck.

Have yet to play in later game areas but with the performance I have I’d imagine I’d probably just have to bump shadows and cloud quality to low.

Cheers
