Whenever you learn a fun word in a language you speak natively or fluently, share it here! I personally will be posting only English words for now, but other languages are welcome if anybody else wants to contribute!

If you want to share a word, please provide the word, the definition and the context in which you found it. That way we can see the word in use.

Compeer (ttrpg.network)

Today I learned the word Compeer!

noun: compeer

a person of equal rank, status, or ability. Peer

alternative: a close friend or comrade

//

The context was "My condolences go out to his family, wife & children. I’m so sorry, my compeer. Miss you already." This was from one professional wrestler regarding another who passed away suddenly.

Another example sentence could be "He was more knowledgeable on the topic than most of his compeers"

This is a word which seems to have fallen out of favor in modern days, but is simple enough that people will likely know what you mean from context clues if you use it. The fact that it is a bit of a dated word means it will fit nicely in to how I talk when I am running a TTRPG for my kids. That said, I work in a large department at work and will for sure be referring to my co-workers who are at the same level as me as my compeers sometime in the next 24 hours, so I think I can get some use of it in my every day life as well.

Bucolic (ttrpg.network)

Today I learned the word Bucolic!

adjective: bucolic

relating to the pleasant aspects of the countryside and country life.

//

The context was (roughly) "we should leave for now, we can celebrate when we are somewhere more bucolic." Yet again, shout out Balder's Gate 3.

I wish I remembered the exact sentence but it was said during a cut scene and I forgot to write down more than the word at the time. Basically, we were in a shitty gross place and we did something good, but we weren't going to celebrate till we went somewhere nicer. I don't want to say more as they would be mild spoilers.

As I mentioned in my thread about picaresque, I play Table Top RPGs with my kids. They like to play as traveling band of mercenaries (easy for one shots) and I can use this when describing locations on their travels, such as a small town they may stumble upon. My favorite place to use these words is with my kids because then I get to teach them what it means, so this is a fantastic word!

Malaise (ttrpg.network)

Today I learned the word Malaise!

noun: malaise

a general feeling of discomfort, illness, or uneasiness whose exact cause is difficult to identify.

//

The context was "Tell me: have you noticed any residual psionic malaise since the alleged encounter?" Shout out Balder's Gate 3.

An alternative sentence could be "The symptoms include headache, fatigue and malaise"

This is a word that will serve me greatly. I rarely get sick but I frequently have days where I just feel generally poor for about 24 hours. Now I can sound pretentious when describing how I feel to my wife!

As a cat owner I thought I'd add this one.

Today I learned the word Secondment!

noun: secondment

the detachment of a person (such as a military officer) from his or her regular organization for temporary assignment elsewhere.

//

The context was "I'm not all right with this. This is fourth secondment. Fourth time I get a load of paperwork."

Another example sentence could be "Her involvement with this project began when she was on a secondment from the Training Department to the QA Department."

I think this is probably not a word that I'll get a ton of use out of, but when I heard it while watching a show last night it seemed like something I might get some use out of. My job has a program where you can take 6 months to work in a different department, both to get a better idea of the company as a whole and also to see if it is something you might want to do more long term. It is something I've been considering so I will have at least one or two chances to bust it out!

Picaresque (ttrpg.network)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Bearigator@ttrpg.network to c/ilearnedaword@ttrpg.network

Today I learned the word Picaresque!

adjective: picaresque

relating to an episodic style of fiction dealing with the adventures of a rough and dishonest but appealing hero.

//

The context was "If you run multiple sessions do it picaresquely, where each session is a self-contained episode.", talking about running a TTRPG campaign for young children.

If I was not in to Tabletop RPGs I do not think I would ever have an excuse to use this word. That said, I am and I run them for my kids semi-regularly so I will for sure be using this word whenever anybody asks me about my hobbies from now on.

Today I learned the word Indecorous!

adjective: indecorous

not in keeping with good taste and propriety; improper.

//

The context was "Would this tattoo be indecorous?"

Despite the sentence I found it in, I believe the word is more commonly used to describe how somebody is acting, such as the phrase "indecorous behavior".

Not a word I intend to add to my vocabulary really (as opposed to Puissant, which is just fun to say), but if I ever decide to get in to writing it seems like a great word!

Puissant (ttrpg.network)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Bearigator@ttrpg.network to c/ilearnedaword@ttrpg.network

Today I learned the word Puissant!

adjective: puissant

having great power or influence.

//

The context was "Some of us have more and more puissant sweat glands than others."

Usually used to refer to somebody like a king, or somebody with great power in a community, I like the use of it here too! The word seems to be pretty archaic but it still seems fun to use!
