Phew. For a second there I thought the book would be about Bluetooth in Linux.

Uh what do you mean by "complex" here? That's what apps script is for. I have a spreadsheet that processes my gmail inbox using regular expressions. Try that in Excel.
I don't think they're all equally bad. They all just happen to at least have met the minimum requirements to rot in hell.
I had a really insecure young manager who was almost half my age. Guy was a chickenshit. One day, while he was out, we reorganized our desks so that we'd not have our backs to the hallway. Instead, we turned our desks 180 degrees so that our backs were to the wall. He came around and said "well, this layout is not in accordance with the open office rules". I paused for a second, looked at him and replied "Oh really? No shit! How cute..." And proceeded to ignore him solemnly.
He didn't do shit. Was eventually let go for complete incompetence and negative reviews from every single one of his employees.
So what's the problem? They're blaming her for keeping up-to-date on topics she was teaching.

You can still read the contents of the directory because you have -r
on it. If you just run ls foo
you'll see your file on there, no problem.
However, without -x
you cannot read metadata in that directory. That's why all information about the file shows as question marks.
These people are a bunch of complete idiots.
Of all the ways to force compliance into someone, they think an authoritarian government would choose to force masks? This is dumb beyond imagination.
Same for software development. There's a trend to cut down on "complexity" and options. They call it "minimalist". I call it lazy ass developers.
So what pisses me off in these cases is this: they didn't contribute with the data. They're a convenient aggregator, I give them that, but the data came from third parties. If you want to start charging for convenient access to the data you should at least make all data before you started charging available in a bulk download for free.
And the same enlightened kids who are so aware about discrimination and gender fluidity (which is good) are the ones discriminating against others because they don't have an iPhone.
