You really have to be careful. Sometimes browser add-ons can really fuck with your search results. A YouTube enhancer extension was a culprit at one point. If you're on Android, it's possible for apps to do this too. Stuff is constantly being patched and blacklisted, but it might not be purely the search engine's fault. I don't main Google anymore, but I still occasionally do use it when other engines let me down, and Google has been different enough.
I'm not saying it's worse or not worse, but that, if it's REALLY bad, it's also possible it's something else.
Edit (a week later): no, Google has actually gotten weirdly worse recently. Confirmed on multiple PCs. Not sure if it's just Google, the entire spread of the internet, or just search engines getting SEOd.
I second this. Be pedantic and specific. I'm still pretty new here and would like to know what's acceptable before upsetting people. Let it be known though, that I'm still not used to the multitudes of different frameworks in different instances and the apps that access them that are popping up, so even if it's in sidebar, there's a very good chance I won't see it because I'm absolutely never sure what instance or community/magazine/sub-instance I'm posting to or used to think about about it yet at all - it's just: read, respond, repeat.
I want to be appropriate and follow rules, but I think a lot of this stuff is gonna have to be tested organically and it's better to have it written out explicitly beforehand. Don't assume anything is intuitive or common knowledge.
I've been seeing bot-mirror accounts of real accounts on mastodon. Just do the reverse. Be on Twitter, but prioritize this "hot new thing"
They definitely need to get off Twitter and onto mastodon. I'm surprised i don't see more hyperfamous people on there yet. Honestly, besides herd mentality, I'm not sure what's keeping them there instead of mastodon.
