He was not part of the national team anymore. This is a typical effort by an older player trying to extend this career
He hasn’t played for Argentina since the friendlies post-WC. During this WC qualifiers he has not been called up. His time w the national team actually ended during the WC, when he was only used sparingly and never featured in the crucial games.
Seems like this was an effort this year by an older player trying to extend his career. Shame.
