“Clearly, what we are doing is not working,” said state Rep. Bill Schuette, a Republican from Gladwin County...

“You look across the country, we are one of the only states that has a so-called independent head of its education department, and I believe that this, in practice, has removed an important element of accountability from our state’s public education system,” Schuette added.

Interesting point, but weirdly made, since the goal of the Republicans is to put more power in the hands of a single government head. There's no way that dissonance is caused by hypocrisy, right?

The state board’s power has been reduced significantly over the years, particularly under the initiatives of former Gov. John Engler, a Republican who transferred a number of the board’s responsibilities to the state superintendent.

Ah, so it's the classic Republican playbook of breaking the government, blaming the system for being broken, and using it as an excuse to break it further. Of course.

I think Tuvok probably had security clearances that might have been problematic to duplicate. Not that that would stop Janeway. I think it just means Tuvix would end up joining Section 31 after they get back to Earth

Supporting your local farmer's market could soon be a matter of life or death

They have marshalls for that. Perhaps what this is showing us that the marshalls need some reforms

This is the second, and more promising, time chemicals associated with life have been detected in the planet's atmosphere by Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

I thought I'd remembered reading about this before. Sounds like just a couple more years, and they'll be sure this gas is there, which is huge, but not totally conclusive.

Personally, I'd bet it's life. A big rocky planet with an ocean of phytoplankton sounds like our best bet for finding it. The scientists in the article are trying really hard not to be excited

The solution is obviously creating dire sloths

...doesn't it usually imply...something you have in common?

Yes. That you live in the same area. You have the same elected representatives, you use the same public services, you shop at the same stores, you live with the same stakes. That's why people say you need to get involved in your community. Whether or not you acknowledge it, you're part of it

Edit: to add, "community center" probably sounds old-fashioned to you, because of what they were talking about:

it's hard to get anyone to be willing to be remotely friendly or willing to admit that they are destroying the social fabric of their own Communities.

Getting rid of places where you can engage with your community has been part of this effort. Community centers are run by local governments, and are often one of the first things conservatives try to cut

It's the Emperor's New Clothes. Their perceptions of reality are so warped, that they think they look great
