Nice! I'll definitely check it out. Makes me a little sad because I just discovered the app Summit and it has seriously blown me away with how above and beyond just serving comments and posts that the dev of this app has gone. It's like Lemmy+ with tagging, trending communities and the ability to make multicommunities!

But I'll be checking out Interstellar for sure and if I like, I'll probably be moving to Piefed then.

Me schizo posting? That's pretty funny coming from someone that just made up a fabricated story about me going out of my way to interact with this person. And someone that goes around accusing people of using multiple accounts for some agenda. But you do you.

Probably going to be ignoring most replies here because I've seen the song that you people sing, especially when it comes to criticism of Lemmy, and it's predictable and boring (and a little alarming) now. If there was the feature here to disable notifications for a post I would use it but oh well. This is going to be my last post from this account anyway.

Last night I made a fairly controversial post discussing how 'blocking' works here on Lemmy. And let me tell you something, my eyes have been opened even wider about this place and a lot of the people here now. I started off angry about the fact that people can downvote troll you around here and there's nothing you can do about it but by the end of it, I was angry (or more accurately perturbed) about something else entirely. And that was watching blatant false info in the thread get upvoted like it's truth. In other words a lot of people around here actually prefer misinformation as long as it suits their vibes and circlejerk best. Just like the MAGAs that everyone here shits on. The pearl clutching and insults were expected, that's the most over exposed verse of the same old song that I've come to expect from this place. But what got to me and made me stop listening to what anyone had to say was watching everyone upvote incorrect information because it suited them best.

And on the subject of downvoting. The fact that the general consensus towards having someone go through your profile and downvote everything is "Lol loser they're just imaginary internet points. You should be cool and tough and beyond it all like me. Look at me! Look at how cool and awesome I am!" (along with other people then doing the same because they think it's funny or something) reduced my confidence in admins actually doing anything about harassment here to around 0.1%. So you can't use your own moderation tools because they're useless and you can't rely on help from admins or moderators either. Unless it's Ada because Ada is awesome and protective of users. In fact I reported the person on my other account as was suggested to me and I haven't heard anything since.

And I know why a lot of people here are so against proper blocking. It's the 'free speech' types that want the right to barge in anywhere, even when they've been explicitly told they're not welcome. They'll break down your locked front door to tell you how stupid you are anyway. That's why you get so many of the types around here that will go into !reddit@lemmy.world to complain about people talking about Reddit. And that's why seemingly every women-centric community was harrassed out of existence and why the only way for a women-centric community to survive around here is to take extra measures like making it women only and actively removing anyone that doesn't belong. Because apparently a lot of people here are spoiled toddlers that have never been told "no" in their lives, so they have to treated like toddlers.

And the thing that gets me most of all. Despite the outright hostility towards anyone that has something not 100% positive to say about how things work here and despite the clear history of hostility towards women and despite the fact that you can't really protect yourself from harrassment because the harrassor's free speech is more important or something, people here just can't fathom why anyone would choose a platform like Bluesky instead. Everyone and everything else is simply the enemy. But let me tell you, as an end user not trying to set up servers, it's not the infrastructure and design of a platform that makes it what it is, it's the users. So the reasons why people would choose Bluesky instead are less snarky and hostile neckbeards, women and LGBTQ+ people being allowed to exist without taking special measures and the fact that you can actually have confidence in the tools provided to you to moderate your own experience. I've been told that actually blocking properly would be impossible here because of how federation works. Well I'm sorry to say, that's a big glaring issue with this setup then.

I'm actually thinking of looking for somewhere else now. Bluesky is not my style but I wish there was a Reddit equivalent to it. The only thing keeping me here now is certain people that I've met and interacted with, who I would miss a lot now that I've got to know them a little (I repeat, the users make a platform what it is, not the technical specs). And you can be sure that if I'm on another platform and the subject of Lemmy comes up, I will be discussing exactly what I have experienced and seen here. And I look forward to seeing that get shared to some meta community here with everyone clutching their pearls and trying to figure out why anyone would possibly dislike this platform.

I might hold out for more app support for Piefed though. And just park on my Blåhaj account until then. But unfortunely that doesn't change the fact that potential new users are going to just keep getting chased away from here, while the clueless neckbeards that chased them try to figure out why people are going elsewhere.

Yeah I'm honestly just waiting for a decent app before I jump over to Piefed. Everything I see about that place excites me because every time they drop a changelog, it's chock full of great things that improve the end user's experience. It's the future of this platform IMO.

According to another user in here, blocking on Mastodon actually works. So seems like it is possible to do in the Fediverse.

The only way I could see that working is if the list of users you blocked were federated too, and effectively made public

I actually thought blocks were public already. And personally I don't see how it would be an issue if people that I haven't blocked can see who I've blocked.

As far as I'm aware, on Reddit blocking a user doesn't hide your comments from them

According to Reddit themselves on their support page: "Redditors you block won't be able to access your profile or see or reply to your posts or comments"

Then what happens if you post in a community where someone you've blocked is a moderator?

Let moderators see comments from users that have blocked them in communities that they moderate but nowhere else. Or do whatever Reddit does in this case.

With admins, mods (not relevant for default UI?) actively dealing with mass downvotes, stalker-like behaviour and so on.

See that's my problem here. I just came from a heavily moderated instance because I thought that I could moderate my own experience instead. But it turns out that I have to rely on admins and moderators anyway.

Part of the adoption of the dual-side block method is because large corps want automation and don't really care about quality (all about engagement).

Yeah I don't buy this. To me, it makes perfect logical sense that if I block someone, they're actually blocked and not just hidden from my view. Maybe this wasn't a problem for forum sites used by a couple of hundred people at most but it's not 1999 anymore and there's a lot of psychos out there. It's nice to know that you can actually protect yourself to some extent on an online platform these days.

If I block someone on Mastodon or another Fediverse microblogging instance, they’re blocked

I too enjoy when the proper meanings of words get used and things work as advertised. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills that this is such a controversial topic here. Imagine wanting moderation tools that actually work, the nerve!

[–] Character_Locked@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago

When you block someone, the first thing that Facebook does is restrict the blocked user's access to your profile. The user can't view your profile even if they have a direct link to your account page. They'll get an error message if they try to do that.

Information from https://www.howtogeek.com/896008/what-happens-when-you-block-someone-on-facebook/

You can keep making these bullshit statements about how it works on other sites but thankfully I have this thing called 'internet' to look up the facts myself.

[–] Character_Locked@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

If you’d like to cut off contact from someone for any reason, you can block them by going to their profile or visiting your user settings.

Redditors you block won't be able to access your profile or see or reply to your post or comments in communities, unless you are a moderator in specific situations.

From https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/4413520308372-How-does-blocking-work. But I see that you downvoted that user for their correct information anyway without bothering to confirm for yourself. I find it pretty sad how people around here seem to be falling over themselves to defend the Fediverse at all costs without even discussing something or wanting it to be better.

I have literally always known blocking to be blocking, not filtering. Blocking blocks people on your phone, on chat apps, on Facebook and on Reddit. Not sure why this is a special case that needs to be forgiven or ignored.

Good one 🤣🤣😂🤣

Today I found out that on this platform, "block" is just a fancy word for "filter". Just had an individual user go through my entire profile and downvote everything. So I blocked them, thinking that this would make me safe from any future stalking. But I was just informed that no, any user that you 'block' is actually still able to see everything that you post and vote freely.

All that 'blocking' actually does is hide the person from you. But they're still free to stalk and do as they please. I just tested this out for myself using my other account and sure enough, it's true.

I just want to know, how is this acceptable? I bet you that if I called out this user publically, I would probably end up in hot water myself for harassment or something. And yet 'blocking' is completely fkn useless too. So what recourse does a user actually have here when faced with a hostile user that wants to ruin their experience on Lemmy?

Coming from Blåhaj, I thought I would try 'moderating' my own experience for a bit. But you can't 'moderate' your own experience if the tools to do so are fkn useless and only trick you into thinking that something has been achieved, without actually doing anything useful.

And now I'm starting to see a new value in instances like Blåhaj. Because you actually need admins that give a shit around here or else you're just left to the wolves on a platform that seems more interested in protecting abusive users than allowing users to protect themselves.

Edit: watching you all upvote the person talking shit about how this works on other platforms while downvoting the actual correct information that comes with a source has certainly taught me a thing or two about this platform and the people on it. You all actually prefer misinformation to fact as long as it suits your vibe or opinion more. Like a bunch of fkn MAGAs. I really wish there was a way to disable notifications for this post (another feature missing here) because watching you people upvote misinformation is enough to make me no longer give a flying fuck what anyone here says or thinks.

Just had one single person go through my entire profile and downvote every comment and post except for those that I assume they're de-federated from. And now, thanks to this nifty little tool at votes.gregtech.eu, you can see exactly who has voted on your posts in most cases. So I was able to block this person and avoid having a stalker downvoting everything I post.

IMO, users like this should be named and shamed so that everyone else has a chance to block them and remove bad actors from their Lemmy experience. We've got !fediblock@lemmy.dbzer0.com for admins to sus out bad instances. Why not something like that but for users to sus out other users? Or would that count as doxxing or something?

Hi, I hope this isn't a weird or stupid question.

I only recently started using Alice bands (regrowing my hair properly for the first time in YEARS) and I'm in love. Since using Alice bands, I actually don't want hair ties to go near my hair again lol, they feel restricting and awful in comparison.

But I know that there are different types and I feel like before shopping blind again, it would be nice to know what the best types are. I've been using straight up plastic, skinny Alice bands, which are now both broken in the same place right in the middle. They weren't ideal in the first place though, they never quite fit my head nicely and the plastic always felt too hard and rigid. So basically I'm asking if there's any specific materials or widths or types I should be looking out for. And something that lasts more than a few months before breaking.

And my bonus question: what do you guys do with your hair when you sleep? When I was younger, it's like my hair was made of silk and I could practically roll out of bed, flick my hair and be ready for the day. These days it's like I'm having wrestling matches in my sleep and I'm almost guaranteed a knotty mess in the morning. So I'm just wondering, those of you who are a little more tenured with long hair, do you do anything in particular with your hair before sleeping to save it? Or do you just deal with the mess every morning like I do?

I hope this is a suitable place to ask about this. I've noticed now after 3 account migrations that no matter which instance you import settings into, all of your subscriptions end up stuck listed as "Subscribe pending". Functionally, everything works as it should though, and all of those communities still show up in your Subscribed feed. It's just an eyesore / annoyance.

You can get them to properly say "Subscribed" again by unsubbing and resubbing but eventually I might end up with a huge list of communities to do this with any time I try another instance. Is there any way to resolve this besides unsubbing and resubbing one by one?

Hi Blåhaj. I've been wondering if it's a good idea posting here seeing as only Blåhaj users have made posts here before. I don't see a rule that others can't welcome themselves to this instance though, so forgive me if I'm doing a bad.

I'm not actually sure new here, so I also feel obligated to post this for anyone that might have seen my other account around, as well as the sake of admins and moderators around here. My Blåhaj account is @Zero22xx@lemmy.blahaj.zone. Not running away from anything here, just exploring. I'll probably be mainly using this lemm.ee account from now for the next few months at least, even when I post here in Blåhaj communities.

I'm planning on eventually settling on Piefed or mbin once there's decent app support for either (preferably Piefed) and hopefully by then I'll have finally settled on a new online handle that I'll be happy with for the foreseeable future.

I decided on a new instance for now because I haven't seen much of what Lemmy really looks like outside of Blåhaj yet since I got here. But I'll still be at the very least lurking and upvoting around here.

So I hope this post is ok here from a non Blåhaj account. Blåhaj is my Fediverse homeland, I'm just using a foreign passport with a temp name right now.
