Just have to get people to call Washington, D.C. just "DC". My high school went to a band festival in Indianapolis and when people asked where we were from (especially the east side schools) we'd have to clarify that we're from the state of Washington and not DC.
There's also the added bonus that WA is also Western Australia, so I always have to double-check whenever it's mention in headlines

If you use Firefox nightly (and maybe some of the other beta branches too, I'm not sure), there's a way to get any extension, they just might not work properly. I haven't really had issues with nightly, despite it being such a bleeding-edge build - although I would recommend keeping a backup browser since sometimes it decides to just stop working
