This could at least be relevant whataboutism if Trump were on trial for paying hush money.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 33 points 11 months ago

Or if Tiger Woods ran for office.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 51 points 11 months ago (3 children)

"They did it, so it's okay when we do it" is such a tired excuse from Republicans at this point. Especially when the "they did it" is so often projection.

[–] Dkarma@lemmy.world 16 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Tiger didn't interfere in an election.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Yes, but the story they're pushing is that this is a hush money trial.

[–] ApostleO@startrek.website 7 points 11 months ago

It's called "Whattaboutism" and it's straight from Russia's playbook.

[–] SeaJ@lemm.ee 5 points 11 months ago

It's not even "they did it." It's "someone did it." Tiger Woods is not a Democratic political figure. Nor did he fail to properly file the payments. This is not even an apples and oranges comparison. Those are at least both fruits. This is more like an apples to rat comparison. Not both fruits but technically both are edible.

So glad I didn't vote for him as president then! 🙄

Damn, I wrote in tiger woods before I found out

[–] SeaJ@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago

Your face must be so red from embarrassment. /s

Paying someone to sign an NDA is not illegal. Using your attorney to obfuscate the payment using campaign funds, while evading taxes, in order to influence an election is illegal.

[–] TheRedSpade@lemmy.world 29 points 11 months ago

They'd still find some bullshit reason to downplay it, but I really think we should stop referring to this election interference trial as a hush money trial.

Two wrongs don’t make a right, Lindsey. Didn’t your mama teach you that?

[–] jeffw@lemmy.world 23 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Also, Woods wasn’t illegally smuggling it through his campaign funds

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

I mean, Trump wasn't either. That's the issue with the payment -- the campaign could have paid for it or Trump could have paid for it and reported it as a contribution to the campaign. Instead the catch and kill program was designed to keep these incidents off the campaign's books.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Nope. She probably beat his ass.

Tiger Wood wasn't a political candidate trying to hide that information from voters.

Also, I cannot wait to read either of these slimy bastards' obituaries.

[–] halferect@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

The classic president tiger woods defense...

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Tiger Woods never ran for office so this comparison is hogwash.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah Lindsey can’t think of anyone, least of all anyone he may know better, who regularly pays hush money.

[–] blarth@thelemmy.club 1 points 11 months ago

The unmarried male senator who is reported to be a closeted gay man has no issues with paying hush money. Everyone’s doing it, right??
