Is it worth playing these games if I didn't love the original but I did love Crisis Core?

When you say “original” you mean the 1997 one?
I’d say so. FF7 was always just OK to me, but Remake and Rebirth have been fun and I feel like I appreciate these characters a bit more now. Though these new ones do change up the story a bit.
Yeah, the '97 original one. I never cared for most of the characters and the story got stale after Cosmo Canyon. But worst of all, most of the mini games were horrendous (and most of them were mandatory).
Now, I like a good mini game, I like most Final Fantasy games, and I loved Crisis Core (the original on the PSP). So, I'm kind of conflicted. I would just play it, but I also have a backlog of games I want to play.
As a big Crisis Core enjoyer I found Part 1 - Remake to have an absurd amount of filler and not understandable references in cutscenes which do hamper the experience. Of course it was amazing to see the Crisis Core pre renders become in-game visuals, but the story flow was absolutely not there for me. It was enjoyable enough, but nowhere near as great as most made it out to be. My hope with Rebirth is that it fixes these problems, as the game can be fun if it had better structure.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Remake at the time (I liked it but I didn’t think it was amazing either), but as I near the end of Rebirth I’m actually kind of interested in playing it again.
Rebirth, just FYI, has a TON (think of a number and add more to that) of mini games which you could probably chalk up as filler. But even though some of them are pretty mid I am enjoying this game a lot more than Remake.
If you loved Crisis Core then yes. This game has similar combat although a lot more advanced.
Only if you like a ton of mini games to preoccupy your time in-between every bit of story along the way. Also, if you like open world areas with very simple predetermined objectives for every region. Not to much to do in terms of exploration, mostly just hand holding to track down all the things then move on to the next. I loved it but I am sure a lot of people don't.
Does the combat ever get better? I've tried restarting FF7 Remake 6 or 7 times - no exaggeration - and the combat just feels so boring. I think it comes down to the large health pools of the enemies which might have been needed for turn based action, but with real-time combat it's just a slog.
Perhaps you're not playing it properly? Enemies tend to take a long time to fell if you are not focusing on their weaknesses or staggering and then upping the stagger multiplier. You're really intended to use all your moves synergistically and be switching between characters to build ATB. With the synergy skills and abilities the combat has gotten a bit more complex in the sequel
From what I've seen the combat is considered one of the strengths of the remake series.
It's the best they have done to date. Every game since 12 has basically been them trying to get to this, and they nailed it if you ask me. You have real time battles with loads of spells and techniques where you can switch between anyone in an instant and feels flawless. You can stop battle and take your time selecting the next move or you setup preset moves that you love to L1 and a button so the battles feel seemless and uninterrupted. You get like 9 people to play with and all of them are very unique in style.
The single thing I saw room for improvement was allowing you to have more flexibility over your teammates that you are not controlling so they do more on their own. Throughout the game you do get materia specifically to address this, but I would have much preferred a simple gambit system that FF12 used instead.
Outside of that, as someone who grew up playing the original, this game far exceeded anything I could have wanted and hits all the nostalgia. I don't get much time to play these days, so I am still playing through it, but I believe I am nearing the end soon. For comparison I play a lot of games throughout the year, but I realized recently I haven't beaten one in over a year. I have no doubts I will beat this one soon.
Yeah I hate being this guy but like someone else said, you're likely not playing it right. The only enemies that should be somewhat slow to take down are bosses.
But otherwise it's about how you use your abilities, using all your party members abilities, materia setup, etc. Also make sure someone has the Assess materia equipped and Assess every enemy you fight so that you know exactly what to do to pressure an enemy and then stagger them and what their weaknesses are.
The combat in this game is incredibly complex and might be the best version of real time/turn based I've ever seen.
