Well, it's kind of obvious. They've had lots of close wins and a few blowout losses. Maybe it's a tactic, if you go down by a couple, give up and save energy for the next one haha.

The game is about averages

If we say that league average scoring is 3 then losing 0-6 puts you in a good spot to string together a few wins

That's a crazy stat. Are all of the league's bottom feeders good overtime teams? I feel like that's the only explanation because it's so hard for me to imagine San Jose or Chicago matching their opponents for goals over the course of almost seventy first (or second, or third) periods.
