I'm new to Soulseek. Got my Nicotine+ docker set up w/ VPN through gluetun. I'm good to go. Port forwarding is working correctly and I'm sharing a little over 100GB of flacs that I have ripped personally with EAC and a couple people have downloaded some of my stuff, which is really cool. I don't have privileges rn.

But I there are a lot of albums that I've lost over the years that I see on SoulSeek. I want them. But I want to make sure I don't get blocked or banned. So, say a person has 3-5 whole albums that I want. Is it proper to just download them all at once? I've seen things like this on one person's profile page:

If you start browsing my share like it is a shop and queueing everything you come across e.g. whole artist folders, I will just remove you.

So a little guidance from this community would make me feel a little more confident?

Personally I love to see someone downloading a shit load of stuff from me. Someone recently got a whole labels releases from me of over 30gb but that just tells me they have good taste in music as far as I'm concerned so I then explored their files and ended up getting a lot of interesting stuff in return.

I think these people with all their locked files asking for shit like gift vouchers in return for the privaledge of downloading a file from them are scummy, so the way you've approached it sounds great to me, you are sharing so grab whatever you need from people. Hopefully they will then explore your files and the cycle repeats!

I'm with you. I'm doing the same. One guys asked me for fees like 100 dollars. Just a few like that. Some people have the files locked but if you ask them they grant you access. Most of people are into sharing gladly .

Within my chosen genre locked files tend to always mean they want something like that in return. Anyone I come across like this I block out of spite, I love sharing files with people but these people don't deserve it IMO.

I haven't used soulseek in probably a decade but are there really people in there expecting payment to let you download music from them?? wtf...

[–] maythebananabewithyo@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I thought Soulseek went the way of Limewire and Kazaa when things like Pirate Bay and whatnot became go-to sites…

I mean, back in the day it was amazing, anything I wanted I could just about find. Random One Hit Wonder Japanese pop-punk band that I only heard about in passing? Yeah I could find their whole discography on Soulseek. It was awesome. I wish I could remember that band now..

I think it is still pretty great, at least for the genre that I listen to it is. You will not find this music on traditional torrent sites and the like where as you can find a lot of it on soulseek. Private trackers may have more of these releases but I cannot be fucked with all that bs.

[–] theskyisfalling@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 months ago

Sadly yes, I see a lot of people (although it may be more isolated to the kinds of music I search out) who have wishlists of releases they are willing to swap some files with and I have also seen a lot of people saying they will unlock files in exchange for bandcamp vouchers and the like.

The fact that you're sharing is already enough

[–] owen@lemmy.ca 11 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Exactly. And honestly, even being a leech is better than allowing the network to fade away IMO

100GB of flacs

You're already doing great.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about etiquette beyond making sure to reshare. If people want to to tighten their queue limits, upspeed, etc, they can. Or to your point, if they think you're mooching, they can cancel your downloads.

[–] Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de 23 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I just pull no more than an album at a time from people usually. spread it out, come back the next day etc. If you aren't sure, use the chat function and ask them if they are OK with you queuing up more than a couple of full albums at a time.

I share freely, no restrictions other than bandwidth cap and use a round robin to allocate upload slots to people, so if someone does queue up a hundred gigs of flacs from me (in my library that can be a single artist) it doesn't block everyone else for a week.

This is the heart of it: Pacing your downloads

[–] ElectricAirship@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 8 months ago

A few times when I download more than an album from someone,I send them a quick "thanks for the albums!"

Before I download from someone, I always check their user info too

[–] neo@lemmy.comfysnug.space 11 points 8 months ago

Personally I only ask that you "share-alike" aka make what you download from me available for others to download from you.

[–] IlIllIIIllIlIlIIlI@lemmy.world 10 points 8 months ago

If you are sharing a lot of music I really don't mind if you download several albums from me, nowadays with this bandwith I dont care. If you want to be extra polite just a quick "thanks for the music " is perfect. Thanks for sharing your personal rips, that is quality content.

[–] clearleaf@lemmy.world 8 points 8 months ago (1 children)

There are some users who are dicks that ban people, but you'll only be banned from that one person's downloads. If it happens just download from someone else who's not a psychopath about it. Most people on soulseek want to share. It's not a private tracker and there's no e-penis to be gained. DO share your own collection though because you might as well.

[–] Nioxic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 months ago

It’s not a private tracker

what exactly is it, though?

[–] fosstulate@iusearchlinux.fyi 7 points 8 months ago

I suspect a lot of users with silly warnings in their profile like OP described haven't bothered configuring their Upload/Download preferences. The tools for managing slot numbers and queue scheme (round robin v. FIFO) are all there.

[–] 01011@monero.town 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I use the leech filter to ensure that whoever downloads from me is at least sharing something. Outside of that I do not care. Download as much from me as you like.

[–] hefty4871@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

How do you filter leachers?

[–] 01011@monero.town 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

I use the leech detector plugin on nicotine+. It allows me to set minimum parameters for the number of files and folders that users must have available to share before they can download from me. https://github.com/nicotine-plus/nicotine-plus/tree/5fe3aa776bfecc4b06818edf131ae8cc9e8f79bd/pynicotine/plugins/leech_detector

It would be amazing if lidarr could also interface with soulless. Id use it again but I'm way too lazy to go back to running randomly downloaded albums through whatever automated fingerprinting gui that went against musicbrainz I was using at the time

[–] cfi@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

beets makes this mostly painless with quiet imports.

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml -1 points 8 months ago (2 children)

I ban anyone that queues up more than one album and doesn't share or shares only their download folder.

[–] ReedReads@lemmy.zip 2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Just so you know, the example docker compose file has /downloads as the only volume option for media. So I pointed the internal docker folder /downloads at my whole music library.

So you’re almost certainly banning people who are sharing their whole library if they are using the default docker compose file. For example, you would ban me by that rationale.

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

First of all you can map more volumes and second of all I didn't mean the folder was called downloads just that its obviously not their music library.

[–] ReedReads@lemmy.zip 0 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I laughed.

Definitely not going to map to more volumes than necessary. It’s okay if you ban me. I’ll deal with it.

[–] Nioxic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

So you only allow people to download, if they already downloaded something and put it in a proper folder?

so no noobs allowed?

its like those circles of you need experience to get a job, but you need job to get experience
