What the fuck how can anyone survive that ? What the hell ?

The inner workings of the mind are a mystery we've hardly scratched the surface of understanding. His basic functions remained, but his demeanor and personality dramatically shifted. Let alone his survival. His case let us know that we don't know shit, relatively speaking.

But why didn't he blead to death or something . I thought the hospitals were a joke back then

[–] explodicle@local106.com 10 points 8 months ago

Basically everything (but the fact that a bar went through his head) was in his favor. He was young and healthy. His brilliant surgeon had actually watched a similar failed surgery once before, and so allowed drainage into Gage's sinuses once the bar was removed. This controlled blood flow while allowing pus to drain out later.

If you ever see anything like this, don't pull it out - let the doctor do it!

Beats me, as the odds should have readily been against him. It's a notable case for a reason.

[–] The_wild_card@lemmy.ml 3 points 8 months ago

Yeah it is a mystery i wonder how much of the facts we have about it is correct

[–] flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works 5 points 8 months ago (3 children)

Obviously, it's because he keep kept standing, so the head was elevated above the heart, limiting the blood flow considerably.

That concludes my shitty fiction for the day...

Just pitch it to disney now or somethin.

[–] XTornado@lemmy.ml 2 points 8 months ago

Yes and they probably put leeches all over his wounds too.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phineas_Gage

It appears that he drove home, summoned the doctor, and they did the surgery at his house

Like how an old twisted coathangar can still work fine as a radio antenna.

Yeah, that one's just tragic since it was done to her, rather than some accident. Shady "medical" practice.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

They were all done to their patients. Parents did that shit to quiet up their kids. I had a semi rational fear of my own parents sending me off for some "treatment" for being too different growing up.

[–] MightyGalhupo@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

Or rather the no longer phineas gage approach.

This is why if AGI is eventually created, making humans happy should NOT be a directive.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 13 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I don't know, man... an ice pick scraping out your frontal lobe will make global warming far more tolerable.

[–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 5 points 8 months ago

And if they mess it up you don't have to tolerate it at all!

[–] RiikkaTheIcePrincess@pawb.social 9 points 8 months ago

Ahhh, that's how to be happy in this hell world! Seems I got the wrong lobes pierced!
