I can't believe I haven't seen that yet.

Almost by definition that's a parody.

But that's also an extremely fine line.

I don't see how it isn't a parody. It's a parody of biopics, of Weird Al, of movies in general, of reality in general...

I was just being silly as this is about spoofs and not parodies.

tbh I'm not sure what the difference is

Walk Hard is one of my favorites. Also 2007, so not so recent. They fell off hard after Tropic Thunder 2008ish. MacGruber was okay. Popstar would be the only one I can think of that's fairly recent

I feel like hail Cesar and death to Stalin were a bit more nuanced comedy, but both decently spoofish. Beerfest felt like it wanted to be a spoof film, but then they enjoyed making it too much.

Deadpool2 would make my list of spoof films, but tries too hard to be original.

If hot fuzz is on the list then at least a couple of the above make the list. Imo hot fuzz is satirical as much as spoof.

Spoofs died in the mid 2000's, they were greatly overproduced, and lost their luster. Kingsmen could be considered a spoof, akin to the spoofs of the mid 2000's, just a terrible movie that seems to be "we can make this genre too, but sillier"

It’s a series, but The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window was a pretty fun watch.

Second this, it was actually a pretty good thriller in and of itself too

The repair man taking a month to fix a mailbox.

This is Spinal Tap (1984)

I think spoofs are just far easier to do in short form content - you get all that spoofy goodness without needing to build a full hour and a half.

Spoof movies may be dead but I'm okay with that, there are better media formats for that topic. Also, spoof TV shows are still going strong.

Maybe not a direct spoof, but Black Dynamite. Though it's not new, 2009.

[–] Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

The two Hitman's Bodyguard films were pretty good

Superhero movie (2008)

Movie 43 (2013)

Scary Movie 5 (2013)

The Starving Games {2013(highly recommend)}

This is a list of the movies that killed the genre moreso than a list of movies that are great.

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

I mean I'll be the first person to admit that my taste is apparently shit to the common person.

But I loved each of these movies. I love absurdist humor.

Cantmiss Evershot is my favorite spoof character name.

Edit: closely followed by The Great White Bitch.
