Why does mastodon show news ? (lemmy.world)

In the Mastodon app, there is a News tab, why is that ? Is it a way do monetize the service or just a help to check up on the hot news going on on Mastodon ?

What platform are you talking about? On ios i dont see such a tab. Also, mastodon isnt a centralized service, thats the whole point. There are lemmy apps that show ads but I would def not install them. Probably just posts that have a #news tag?

I see News in the Mastodon app v2.3.0 on Google Play. It's under the Search button - News tab.

It says they are the news stories getting talked about on Mastodon. But it looks like links to articles from news outlets rather than a trending page?
